Actually, Mandarin (Chinese) is the language spoken by more people in the world. But where ever you call home you should speak that language.

It ISN'T the most widely spoken language on Earth.

However it is used so much in business and the world that everyone SHOULD learn it, I agree.

Incidentally, EVERYONE in the world should learn 5 or 6 different languages. We just need to start when we're very young. If Europe can do it, we all can.

No. Globalization is bad...the only reason English is the most spoken language on Earth is because English speaking countries set out to conquer the world. What is ignorant is that all English people think everyone should know how to speak English...kind of like Americans thinking they can use their money in Canada. I think it's good we still have lots of languages...and by population, there are other languages that outrank English in numbers, if not by worldwide %.

I would think the definition of ignorant would be someone who would post a question with an opinion that is incorrect.

. THE MOST WIDELY SPOKEN LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD
1. Mandarin
Number of speakers: 1 billion+

Surprise, surprise, the most widely spoken language on the planet is based in the most populated country on the planet. Beating second-place English by a 2 to 1 ratio, but don't let that lull you into thinking that Mandarin is easy to learn. Speaking Mandarin can be really tough, because each word can be pronounced in four ways (or "tones"), and a beginner will invariably have trouble distinguishing one tone from another. But if over a billion people could do it, so could you. Try saying hello!

To say "hello" in Mandarin, say "Ni hao" (Nee HaOW). ("Hao" is pronounced as one syllable, but the tone requires that you let your voice drop midway, and then raise it again at the end.)

I see many people are saying Chinese is the language spoken by most people in the world. While that is correct, English is the most accepted language in the world. Just because a lot of poor people are having babies doesnt mean they travel all over. China and India are reproducing like crazy.

Plus, just because someone has bad grammar does not mean you cant understand them. I would much rather deal with someone with bad grammar than a freaking mexican who wont even try to learn the language.

It's advantageous to learn English, however I think it's sad that most Americans speak only one language. It is really limiting. I enjoy speaking another language and it gives me the opportunities to interact with people I would be unable to otherwise.

In the United Staes, its not ignorance, its arrogance. Many people in the US, especially Hispanics, feel that their langauge is the best language in the world and everyone should learn it; therefore, they tend to say (and the US cateers to them) "we don't have to know English, everyone else should become bilingual and learn Spanish." How do I know this? I hear it all of the time in my classes at the University of Texas-El Paso.

This arrogance leads them to say that the US, and all of it's people, will be better off if they were bilingual, and that America is the only country where you don't learn another langauge. Well excuse me, but isn't taking classes in another language one of the requirements for graduating HS in the US? Also, if you continue on (college), don't you have to take another few semesters of a foreign language? I know that I have taken at least 5 classes (1 in HS, 2 introductory, and 2 credit courses) in Spanish.

People need to stop disrespecting the English language because it is causing tremendous tension here in the US.

I know that I didnt answer your question directly, but I think that I know where you were getting at.

Yes. But consider this: Many countries require English classes starting in grade school. What foriegn language do we require in grade school? Many people from other countries (e.g. 1st world, etc.) know at least one other language (english). How many US folks know another language? net-- my point is that it is ignorant NOT to learn another language + know the language of the country you're living in.
