Most countries require passports to be valid for six months before the expiry date, so if yours runs out in November and you are going on holiday in August you will need to get a new passport before you leave. Take both passports with you and present the old one first if they refuse it then present the new one.
Should you require a pre-entry visa send the old passport to the visa office of the embassy concerned if it is valid they will issue the visa, if not they will return your passport with an instruction to get a new one.
Alternatively you could ring the embassy of the country you are entering and ask their advice. But remember the visa and passport requirements can change without much notice.

It is recommended that your passport has at least six months validity when you travel. This is not necessary for all destinations. To check out the minimum passport validity for your destination, go to the Registration section of the website access the Visa Search facility and input your details. You will be advised of the minimum passport validity for your nationality to the destination of your choice. Remember if you are visiting more than one country check the requirement for each, it may be different.

Depends how long your holiday is. Come back before November and you're fine.
However, if you are going to a country which requires a visa, you might have problems.
Also, what passport do you have? If you are a foreign national living abroad, you should check with the local foreigners police that re-entry is not going to be a problem.

It depends on where you are going. If you are a UK citizen travelling within the EU, you can travel on a valid unexpired passport. The rest of the world will typically require at least 3 or 6 months. You do need to speak to the embassy of the country you are travelling to. The UK Foreign Office http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029396086 will have contact details. If it turns you need at least 6 months, the UK Passport Office http://www.passport.gov.uk/index.asp will allow you to renew your passport 9 months before expiration and add the unexpired time to your new passport.

The legal length is min of 6 months, however there are usually no ways around this lenght but there are ways of obtaining a passport which is to visit the office, and this may sound common sense but take as much ID with you as possible. go get a good tan
