Is it supposed to be some sort of reassurance to the speaker that they're more righteous?

Is it supposed to persuade the atheist to change their mind because of fear?

Is it simply a taunt, sort of a "nyah nyah nyah, I'm saved and you're going to roast forever"?

I've never heard anyone saying that before.
I think your question is inciteful and confrontational.
who is taunting who?
how can an atheist 'change their mind'?
atheism is not a religion or belief.
who is the 'speaker' supposed to be addressing?
I suppose it is a fool-proof attempt by the speaker to promote unity amongst the listeners through the medium of mass head nodding and hand raising etc etc.
Its good to belong eh?
Dont know why but this Q really hits the wrong spots with me! no offence

Oh! I just love Hot_airs answer!!!LOL!!!

May I add to that...actually...it is the second last. The last one is against the law at the moment.

History reviels.

It is about fear. Fear is part of why they cling to their belief. They cannot understand why we are not affraid in the same way at least, as they are.

They get frustrated with us because they are not seeing their staight of mind relfecting back. Ours is something they cannot comprehend so they seek for and are given explanations from their religion that explain us in a way that supports their beliefs. Which has absolutly nothing to do with who we aaaaaare.

Peace and good luck to all.

Nothing good is accomplished. Stuff like that only brews anger among us.

I'm not atheist, but I'm not religious either, so all I'd have to say to those statements is that if I am indeed a sinner (and no, I don't believe that god is so wrathful) I would certainly enjoy it, because I would be away from any hoity-toity people who would say things like that.

Tis the cry of the self-righteous. It's how they puff up their self esteem. Sort of like a child with what they think is a treat taunts everyone who doesn't have one.

Christians will see they are wrong when they're...
Oh that's right, Christians are "never" wrong.
What a bunch of pompous, self righteous, bigoted fools.
If fear of hell is the main reason for their faith, there is little substance to their beliefs.
"One cannot find the light by running away from the darkness."
Unless they have been exposed to other religions, I take their supposed "faith" with a grain of (kosher) salt.

Yes, it makes the speaker feel better about his own religious beliefs. The key is that it's all emotionally-based, because there are no real rational arguments in favor of his position. Subconsciously, the theist probably realizes it, which makes him fearful and angry at anyone who challenges his beliefs.

Nothing is accomplished.

I don't understand why they do it.

Who wants devotion based on fear?

And...

There is a difference between being "child-like" and childish. They fall into the latter. Arguing like my 7year old when they can't get you to do what they want. Instead of "It's my ball and if you don't want to play by my rules, I'm telling mom" its "My way is the only way and your going to hell if you don't believe."

Some people get off on the idea of watching their fellow humans suffer excrutiating torments eternally for not agreeing with them.

Says a lot about them and what their morals really are.

This doesn't accomplish anything for the believer. Yet, it proves that many believers are self-righteous, judgemental, haughty people and are easy to critcize. This doesn't do much for the kingdom of GOD... that's for sure! People feel they must defend God or defend His Word but He needs no defending.... He's God all alone and will be when we're gone!!! I apologize for the ignorance that surrounds us lately.
