The criminal on the cross is a perfect example of Salvation.
Going to church, getting baptized, doing good works, being a good person and knowing about reigion doesn't give you Salvation.

The criminal on the cross never did any of those things, he simply believed Jesus.

Being Baptized is a public proclaimation of accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Salvation comes from Jesus Christ ONLY.

He was saved because He believed Jesus is Lord(remember me when you come into your kingdom). He had also repented(we deserve to be here, but He has done nothing wrong). I am paraphrasing since I don't have the scriptures.

Baptism does not get you into Heaven. But we are baptized as a symbolic act of our sins dying and us becoming new creatures in Christ.

Being dunked in water (public outward show of inside salvation--optional) is not necessary to get your spirit recreated (born-again, saved) by asking Jesus to come into your heart (spirit) and save (recreate) you.
It is just something that you can do if you want to AFTER you get saved. Up to you!

I got dunked in a river, I wanted too, when I came up there was an Eagle circling around over head!
Whatever!
Thanky Jesus!

The other rebuked him - What a surprising degree was here of repentance, faith, and other graces! And what abundance of good works, in his public confession of his sin, reproof of his fellow criminal, his honorable testimony to Christ, and profession of faith in him, while he was in so disgraceful circumstances as were stumbling even to his disciples!
The sufferings of this person had been sanctified to him, so that his heart was open to receive help from the hand of the Lord: he is a genuine penitent, and gives the fullest proof he can give of it. the acknowledgment of the justice of his sentence. He had sinned, and he acknowledges his sin; his heart believes unto righteousness, and with his tongue, he makes confession unto salvation. While he condemns himself he bears testimony that Jesus was innocent.
This shows the power of Divine grace. But it encourages none to put off their repentance to the last hour; since, as far as appears, this was the first time this criminal had an opportunity of knowing any thing of Christ, and his conversion was designed to put a peculiar glory on our saviour in his lowest state, while his enemies derided him, and his own disciples either denied or forsook him.

Baptismal is an outward expression of your accepting Jesus as your Lord and master. But let me share a few scriptures with you that shows what is really required of you to be saved.

Romans 10:9-13
That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture says, Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

1 John 2:12
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.

1 John 5:11-13
And this is the witness, that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that has the Son has life; and he that has not the Son of God has not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God.

I say it is possible for one to receive baptism of desire by an implicit desire. This is the principle that makes it possible for non-Christians to be saved. If they are genuinely committed to seeking and living by the truth, then they are implicitly committed to seeking Jesus Christ and living by his commands; they just don’t know that he is the Truth they’re seeking.

Catholics have historically understood that what is absolutely necessary for salvation is a salvific link to the body of Christ, not full incorporation into it.

The thief desired to be with Christ, thus desire for baptism brings justification and justification makes one an heir of life everlasting. If one dies in a state of justification, one will inherit eternal life. Those who die with baptism of desire are saved. Period.

Baptism is merely the first step of obedience in a Christian's life. If you cannot get baptized because of hospitalization, or like the thief on the cross, you have nothing to fear.

But if you can get baptized, you should, because it is a public expression of an inner change.

Baptism is an outward sighn of faith in God. The conversion of the heart is the one that is needed the most.

He was saved by his profession of faith to JESUS to which the LORD replied this day shalt thou be with me in Paradise. How great is the saving grace of our LORD to forgive a criminal who professed his faith in HIM.

There are as many different ideas about salvation as there are denominations. Baptists will talk about spontaneous salvation, for example.
