What exactly is spam made of? I know it's spiced ham, but would it be accurate to call it canned ham?

Spam is a canned precooked meat product made by the Hormel Foods Corporation. The labeled ingredients in the Classic variety of Spam are: chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added, salt, water, sugar, and sodium nitrite. It has gained a peculiar infamy, along with something of a place in pop culture, and has even entered into folklore and urban legend.

The current official explanation is that the name is a syllabic abbreviation of "SPiced hAM", and that the originator was given a $100 prize for coming up with the name.

Other varieties of Spam include Spam Low Sodium, Spam Garlic, Spam and Cheese, Spam with Bacon (Hormel bacon), Spam Spread, Spam Lite (containing pork and chicken), Spam Golden Honey Grail, Spam Hot and Spicy (with Tabasco sauce), Spam Hickory Smoked, and Spam Oven Roasted Turkey[1] - the latter is a halal food, meaning that it is allowed under Islamic law, and is especially popular in Muslim markets.

Spam is produced in (among other places) Austin, Minnesota, USA (also known as Spam Town USA). In 2002, the six billionth can of Spam was sold

Why does SPAM ALWAYS get the bad rap??? I'm Cordon Bleu trained, have a very educated palet, and I LOVE SPAM......I guess that people think that it's gross before they ever try it.......And guess what state consumes SPAM more per capita than any other??? Hawaii, hands down......they even make a form of sushi, called musubi out of rice and SPAM.....which, by the way, is better ingredient wise than hot dogs, folks..........BTW, did you know that hot dogs contain (but NOT limited to) salivary glands, lymph nodes, and other "choice" parts that no human being would eat, but it's all pulverized into a paste and filled into digestible casings......So, you'll eat a hot dog, but not SPAM???? Think again, people..........Enjoy!!!

It is a small furry animal hunted mostly for its rather greasy meat. It is so small that the meat must be scraped from its bones and put into a pot. It usually takes about 50 of these critters to make a decent sandwich. Unfortunately, this is not a healthy meat when canned and should only be eaten fresh. If you are interested in hunting these tasty little guys, bring your straw gun and needle ammunition to the General Store at Rudyard Michigan and you will be able to purchase a state license. Be sure to ask them to tell you where to go. ^_^

SPAM is made from the following parts of the pig:

Shoulder
Picnic
hAM

Add some spices, put it in a can and you get one of Hormel's best selling processed meat products!

Check out their website for interesting facts about Spam.

I slice it, grill it then cut it into cubes and add it to my beans and rice.
