Not so in many religions. Only the 3 monotheist (Jews, Christian, Muslim). This is because they are all version of the same Jewish religion stating: Man was made in Gods image. So who is the image of who?
Example: In the older Zarathustra religion there were 2 equally strong gods: 1 for love/good, 1 for hate/bad.
The satanist worship the devil: hardly an idealized self-image.

Well that's how it typically is with any imaginary friend. That's exactly how much of the biblical stuff was derived. That's why it says god made us in his image (Because he's the idealized us) and why he changes so much over time, why he is brutal in brutish times and slightly more compassionate in more secular, peaceable times.
That's also why the image of Jesus has changed so much over the years. Oldest drawings were of a thin middle eastern man with a goatee, his hair grew longer and he became whiter as time went on. His hair style changed and other things changed, until we wind up with our idealized self-image of a beautifully featured white man with elegant hair.

So your god has perfect grey fur with not a hair out of place and a bushy tail that's the envy of squirreldom everywhere?
And the less said about your nuts, the better.

Yuperoni! They adjust the doctrines and laws to suit their needs and wants. They soothe their guilt for sinning by reciting how Jesus died for their sins so they can commit as many as they like and still go to heaven. They cherry pick what to believe and what to disregard as old laws. Whatever is uncomfortable to practice is ignored.

You know you've made God in your image when he believes all the things you believe, and hates all the people and things that you hate.

That could be more true than we ever suspected. I never thought of it that way but I do give God the personality traits that I wish I had.

And the holy books never mean what they say but instead always say what the believer means.

Excellent point.
I think that's something believers have to guard against-- they are not always successful at it, nor are they aware of it.
