Dating is the act of taking someone out on a date. This involves the guy doing at least most of the following
1) asking a person out in advance
2) picking them up
3) paying for dinner
Many girls think they are dating when they are getting the 2am phone call. Or the "Hey I'm about to go to the movies with some friends. wanna go?" These are called either being used or hanging with friends. If you go dutch everytime you "date" someone, you aren't dating. You are having dinner with a friend, no different than a girlfriend. If you have to start it with, "I'm too broke to go to dinner there" and he finally offers to pay--that does not change the rules. You are still just friends.
If his friends don't know who you are, you are being used and are not actually dating this person.
Chris Rock says "If you've been dating a guy 3 months and you ain't met any of his friends, you are NOT his GIRLFRIEND"
You know what you deserve from a guy. You know what sweeps you off your feet. He knows how to sweep you off your feet too and if he isn't doing it, it's b/c you aren't worth the effort to him. Move on.
Dating simply must involve both parties being willing to tell people they are seeing each other.

It appears you're a top contributor. I bet you know the answer to your question already.
But allow me to share something you may not know yet:
There is a Tagalog word spelled exactly like that, dating, only pronounced differently (short "a" sound instead of long "a" sound). it means immediate impact of your physical appearance.
