Wow, paraphrasing the Bible? How ironic! If atheists want to look forward to a permanent dirt nap, good for them. I have no idea why they bother waking up each day though. If you are just a carbon based life form that will exist for 100 years (if you are really lucky) and then exist nevermore then what is the point of existing? Why are you working that crappy job while some people that play games for a few months a year live in huge mansions and drive expensive cars? If you will not achieve anything in your life why not just end it now?

because you would really have to say, "love the moderately religious who follow the positive moral and ethical precepts of their religion and do not try and interfere with the political process to impose their dark age views on me and my children, hate the axiomatic basis of the religion, but their positive moral and ethical messages can be OK sometimes". not quite as snappy as, "love the sinner hate the sin". the devil may have the best tunes but the Christians have the sound bites.

There's no logic in that kind of comment... altruism and real compassion doesn't pick and choose like that.
Almost forgot to mention, too, that no matter what you say the perception of the "receiver" in any communication is always part of the issue. You could say the nicest things and still get trashed.

You're statement makes no sense.
If you'd said "love the person, hate the religion" it would be more defendable, but look at what you said
LOVE THE RELIGIOUS
That means you love Pat Robertson, he's certainly religous!
Osama bin Laden is certianly religious. Therefore you love him too!
I'm religious and I found you statement, well, astonishing!

because atheists have no reason to "hate" a religon, what someone believes is up to them, we shouldn't intervene.
that, and religions are sensitive topics, its foolish to jest about something which can easily mean life or death to someone else.

Maybe because they fail to grasp the nuance in such a statement.
If someone was doing self-destructive things, would it be loving to accept such behavior, or loving to try to remedy it?

My variation was "hate the individual, not the religion" for one troll. The important thing is that atheists don't think they're better than other people.

Perhaps they realize that comments like that are cop outs and a ridiculous way to criticize others and feel justified in doing so.

Think of it this way. I dismiss religion as just a long-term fad. It will eventually fade and pass.

I don't say that because I don't hate anyone.
I don't believe in religion for myself....but if it works for someone else I'm all for that.
