You've heard it from the JWs... one verse in the entire Bible that actually mentions going door-to-door, and a few other related ones that actually mention a wide variety of preaching and teaching outlets. What the JWs will not tell you is that if they don't go door-to-door, they (1) will be refused baptism and (2) if they are already baptised, they will be visited by elders to find out if they are spiritually sick. Either way, the pressure is on to keep at it in case they jeopardise their chances of surviving Armageddon. Of course, sincere JWs don't think like that at all. They are convinced by their leaders that 99% of all preaching / teaching work done by 1st century Christians was door-to-door work. Drivel.

Christ and the apostles majored in public ministry in the outdoors (hillsides, lake-sides, village squares etc) and in the usual places of worship (the Synagogue, the Areopagus etc). When the Synagogues closed their doors to them, they preached at their own gatherings for worship. Writing also became an important vehicle for spreading the word, then the quiet influence in families of one believer began to "speak" volumes. Prayer underpinned everything. So when we see JWs putting virtually all their time into door-knocking should we not be wondering why they are almost ignoring all those other outlets? They are so oblivious to them they don't even realise the believers they scorn for not door-knocking are busily engaged in all those other outlets. Well, there are none so blind....

have gone door to door sales for 21 years,i will at least listen to what people have to say .never know, i might learn something
southerners will usually listen, and will see the logic quickly, and do it. Yankees usually don't wish to.but will do it when they finally get to understanding what i have to say.after they argue some, its in there nature.
blacks wish it short and to the point, and usually see that its a good thing, they think quicker then most people, and there the only people who will admit they don't have the money right now and will insist that you come back at a certain time and date,Indian people say no but if you insist they Will usually change your minds .and do it.
Arabs just look at you ,with a cold stare and close the door
Australians i like, they listen and usually do it,
English people think to much, talk to much .change the subject.and not many do it,
Chinese people are nice enough but want do it,usually. Japanese want do it usually.
I know this is not what your question is about but i have all day today to just mess around.
I respect religious people, they have a mission and i appreciate them for that even if i don't always agree with them, Peace

Unlike Christendom, Jehovah Witness follow Jesus commandments, his instructions, and his examples.

The Bible is clear that the worldwide preaching of the gospel from the time of Jesus until the present time is for the purpose of a witness. (Matthew 24:14; Luke 24:45-48; Acts 1:8 Ephesians 2:6-7) All believers in the Christ – not just pastors and ministers - are charged and commissioned to go out and preach Christ.

Unfortunately others choose not to listen to Jesus, calling his words, "Drivel". Scriptures are clear you need both faith and works.

Jam 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?

Jam 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Witnesses are very serious about following Biblical precedent.
Hence, based on Acts 5:42 and Acts 20:20, they go door to door.
Most think it is to sell religion. It isn't.
Matthew 24:14 explains their motive.
Its basically to share information.
Despite the fact they try to knock a maximum of 3 times per year (approx.) it can happen ....or appear to happen, that they show up more than that.
Most Witnesses have a sense of humor.
Use it to politely tell them to return less often, or not at all.
They know how to co-operate.

Perhaps this may help in understanding why do Jehovah’s Witnesses preach from house to house?

According to God [JHVH] word, the Bible Jesus foretold for our day this work: “This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.” He also instructed his followers: “Go . . . and make disciples of people of all the nations.”—Matt. 24:14; 28:19.

When Jesus sent out his early disciples, he directed them to go to the homes of the people. (Matt. 10:7, 11-13) The apostle Paul said regarding his ministry: “I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house.”—Acts 20:20, 21; see also Acts 5:42.

The message that the Witnesses proclaim involves the lives of people; they want to be careful to miss no one. (Zeph. 2:2, 3) Their calls are motivated by love—first for God, also for their neighbor.
They do not force their message on others. But they know that people move to new residences and that the circumstances of people change. Today a person may be too busy to listen; another time he may gladly take the time. One member of a household may not be interested, but others may be. People themselves change; serious problems in life may stimulate an awareness of spiritual need.—See also Isaiah 6:8, 11, 12.

In the days following Pentecost of 33 C.E., Jesus’ disciples were already using a superb method of preaching the “good news.” After the persecuted apostles had been dishonored because of Jesus Christ’s name, what did they do? Why, “every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus”! (Acts 5:41, 42) Yes, the apostles witnessed from house to house.

“I did not hold back from telling you any of the things that were profitable nor from teaching you publicly and from house to house. But I thoroughly bore witness both to Jews and to Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.” (Acts 20:20, 21)

So there is a solid Scriptural basis for the house-to-house ministry of Jehovah’s Witnesses. And this is true of various other methods they use to spread the Kingdom message. Interestingly, McClintock and Strong’s Cyclopedia states: “Our Lord and his apostles found places for preaching wherever people could be assembled. The mountain-side, the shores of seas and rivers, the public street, private houses, the porch of the Temple, the Jewish synagogue, and various other places were found available for the proclamation of the Gospel.” (Volume VIII, page 483) Like Jesus and his early disciples, Jehovah’s Witnesses preach the Kingdom message in “the public street, private houses, . . . and various other places.”

Matthew 28:19-20 is a direct command from Jesus, so if you are one of his follower you should do the same.

Well I am sure they will answer that they have been ordered by the bible to spread the good news of God and help others gain salvation etc. etc.

Basically, they need to convert new members. The entire organisation is fueled by this industry- printing religious literature, seeking new converts and training them (They actually practice how to go door to door and deal with every kind of scenario etc.) to make new converts. JWs even keep score of how many magazines, books, return calls and potential converts they have made in what they call "Field Service". They are required to put in a certain number of hours EVERY month doing this. Some make special committments to put in 60 to 120 hrs a month doing this.

It's basically their raison d'etre.

I agree with you that they are basically harmless but they can be deceptive in their tactics. They never tell people upfront that the real purpose of the visits are to make you a member and later on a fellow proselytizer. They make it look like just they want a friendly "chat" or bible discussion. I think they should state up front what their intentions are.

It isn't just the Jehovas Witnesses, a lot of other religious groups do this as well. Personally, I am agnostic, but I don't mind being given flyers or anything like that. Most of the time, I politely refuse, but I've encountered a few very radical people that have started arguments with me. That's the only time I'm annoyed by such behavior.

Also, I think they do that because they are trying to "spread the word", which is I think, something Christians are "supposed to do". Of course, at the expense of everyone else.

Frequently Jesus is noted as having gone preaching. HE even sent his disciples in to various towns from door to door. We Witness period, whether it be at the grocer or at a door.

Answers by such as Anna and Sasi say allot. They don't like what we belief so they don't like us trying to share it, our right. They seem to prefer we keep our opinions to our selves so they complain, their right, I do wish they would keep their complaints based more in fact but to each their own.

if you are really not interested, have the witness put your name on the do not call list, we will not come by for months in case you move out and the next party will be interested. we go door to door because Jesus Christ commanded us at Matthew 28 verse 19 and 20 and since we follow Jesus Christ we do what he commanded. www.watchtower.org. we are not pushing our religion on anyone and it is not a pass to heaven. they did not listen to Jesus or even Noah when he was building the ark, and Jehovah closed the door and destroyed the wicked and he will do the same again. anna knows nothing about us. her husband was disfellowshipped and now she bad mouths Jehovah Witnesses. we are not called watchtower witnesses. sasi you and anna know nothing about us and tell lies. learn what we are all about before you judge us.
