Anything with anti inflammatory will work to a point (Advil, Motrin). A back heating pad will also help temporarily.
If it is a constant pain your best to resolve the back pain by seeing a Chiropractor. Once aligned everything will feel better but you have to make sure your not sitting for hours on end without doing some kind of walking/ stretching in between. Make sure your chair is comfortable and your knees are parallel to the floor. A small cushion placed at the small of your back helps. Rubbing the area that is hurting may also help and placing an ice pack to reduce the swelling around the area may provide some relief.
I've had back pain for years, I feel your pain and hope this helps.

Any ibuprophen product works well for muscle aches -- Advil, Alleve, etc. The prescription strength is 800mg, so don't be afraid to take that much as a starting dose to calm down the pain.
I also use capsicum-based muscle rubs (Capsacin, etc) rather than icy-hot types. I find them a bit more effective and they don't smell.
When I'm not using a rub, I buy the Thermacare 8 hour heating pads. They are... absolutely, totally, wonderfully incredible. 8 hours of heat that stays right where I want it, no cords or microwaves... I find them usually near the tylenol/advil in the medicine section, or near the women's products (commonly used for cramps). Don't use these with any of the muscle rubs though, you can burn your skin that way!

Sounds like a herniated disc. Sitting aggravates the condition. You need to see a neurologist or orthopedic specialist that focuses on backs. Your pain is a signal that something is wrong and ignoring it can make things worse. Good luck. BTW Oxycodone is the only thing that will even tackle that level of pain and many over the counter meds can damage your kidneys and liver in higher doses. Be very careful.

Ibuprofen is not the strongest but can really work better than stronger pain pills for certain aches & pains, like back ache. Also, get up & do some stretches. Touch your toes and hang like that, bent at the waist, to let spine straighten out.

I recommend trying Pain Relief Complex. Other chronic pain remedies target only one of the two pain producing enzymes. This product blocks both pain enzymes (COX-2 and 5-LOX) in a natural product with no side effects.
Aspirin and ibuprofen block only one pain enzyme, but also block the enzyme (COX-1) that protects your stomach from acid. Continued use can be harmful, since everytime you take an aspirin your stomach bleeds a tablespoon of blood.
Since this product is not a drug, it make take about two weeks before maximum results are achieved.
Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

Killing the pain won't help what is wrong with your body, your pain is telling you that you have a serious problem. I speak from experience, had a spinal fusion due to a slipped disc, could not sit with out pain. Have also had pulled muscles in my back. The only answer is to have a qualified doctor check your problem.

Ibuprofen is the strongest painkiller non-prescription. Take up to 800mg every 6 hours, but don't take more than 3200mg a day. If pain is unbearable and chronic, you should see your physician for stronger pain management.

You could try Percogesic at night. It's Tylenol with a little bit of an antihistamine in it to help you sleep. My grandmother takes it for everything... she had a kidney stone and she refused to take any of the narcotics they offered her at the hospital because the Percogesic worked so well. Sometimes it's hard to find and can be expensive, but Eckerd always has it and has a store brand of it, too.
