While there are many "names" or titles used for God in the scriptures, the one that is usually considered to be "the" name of God is היה, usually translated in modern English as Yahwah, or older English as Jehovah.

Because the name was considered to be "the" most sacred name for God, the Jews refused to ever speak the name (so as not to accidently misuse it) or often even to write the name. They would write the name "LORD" instead.

It became a tradition carried over to the New Testament, where God (and Jesus) are referred to as "Lord". And even in English translations, the word היה is usually translated as the word "LORD" (all in caps) unless connected with anothe name.

As far as using "God" when you pray... He is smart enough to know when people are talking to him, regardless of the word they use.

According to one of the contributors on this thing, it's Howard. Comes from the Lord's prayer which begins
"Our father Howard in Heaven, hallowed be thy name."
(okay ... I'm just kidding).
It depends on the religion. There's Jesus, Jehova, Ala and the list goes on. You are not praying in the wrong to refer to the creator as just God. The message still goes out there.

The answer is no.
Pick a religion and you will find a different name for the "Almighty Creator".
There isn't a unanimous name for the "Almighty Creator".
Until all this worlds religious strife is passe, the "Almighty Creator" will have different names and there will be conflict.
... and this is very sad. (SPL)

God has a lot of names because of how people have encountered Him. He is called Yahweh because he saves, Jehovah Rafa because He heals, Tsidkenu because He is Righteous... but if you know in your heart that you are praying ONLY to the God who created the universe, the Divine One who sent His Son Jesus Christ to redeem us from death, the God who provided the Holy Spirit to enlighten our decisions, then you know you are praying to the right God. Oldguy63 contributor up there is right in saying His name is I AM. Because in that name, everything of His character is self sufficient to describe who he really is, because we can only speak of Him what our experiences and vocabulary can reach. In I AM, He is complete in and of Himself.

it's nice to see someone not ridicule God here for a change...

If "God" is the Almighty, then why should one be bothered by whatever name. I can add more: "Why should one communicate with "God"in certain language?" "Why should one pray in the certain places?"etc etc. Who said that all? "God" or "Human"?

Jesus Christ is the name. There are 15 other names listed throughout Scripture that each have a specific meaning for the title. But with regards to salvation and prayer there is only one mediator which is Jesus Christ.
