Yes I always pre-heat the broiler for about 4-5 minutes before I use it. The broiler coil is located at the top on the inside of your oven.
If you leave the door open a crack you might save yourself from burning whatever it is you are broiling. It helps you to keep an eye on the food and doesn't allow you to let it slip your mind. The heat inside the oven will not decrease enough to matter, but fair warning: it will nicely heat up your kitchen.
Hope that helps. :o)

put the oven rack up on the top level that it will go. u turn the broiler on. the broiler is in the top of your oven, sorta the ceiling. leave ur oven door open a crack. when the broiler is on and ready, put whatever u r broiling under it and centered so that as much of it is under the flame as possible. the food should be on a cookie sheet. u might need to move the food around so that it all gets broiled. when it's done, just turn the broiler off and close the oven.

The broiler is basically a grill upside down. Yes, the flames come from the top. No, you don't need to preheat because it's the flames that are cooking, not the heat from an oven. No, you don't need to leave the door open.
Broiling is a healthier option to frying or searing on the stove. Plus, the fat drips away from the meat, unlike in a skillet on the stove.
I broil chicken if I can't get it on the grill if it's cold or something. However, you won't get any added flavor that you get from the grill, so I like to season with anything from spicy steak seasoning flakes to lemon zest.

Well, depending on how new or old your oven is you can have a broiler ontop of your oven or you can just have a single fire on the bottom for all uses for your oven. When you broil something you want it to get really hot in the oven so you do not want to leave the oven door open or else what you are cooking will not cook. Yes, you always have to preheat your oven even if you are not broiling. Depending on what you are putting in your oven is a different story...for poultry (fish and chicken) you preheat your oven (for broil) for about 10 min. For meat (burgers, steak, pork...ect.) you want to preheat for 15 min. For everything else as in brownies or some other sweet you want to preheat for 10 min. but you wouldn't broil sweets anyways. while you are broiling ALWAYS watch what you are cooking because it could burn BUT NEVER open the oven when something is cooking...not because it is hazards but because what is are cooking will not cook. I hope that helped you!! Happy cooking:) and good luck :)

If you have an electric oven, leave the door cracked. There should even be a catch or setting to position the door for broiling. The reason is that an electric oven doesn't maintain a constant temp. It cycles up and down trying to hit an average. And pre-heating isn't necessary with broiling. It's direct heat, so, unlike roasting, baking, etc., it's either on or off.
