Valid points!
Police Officers know the risks of the job and yet they CHOOSE to serve. Their families also make great sacrifices. How would you like to send your spouse or parent off to work every morning never knowing if you will see them alive again?
Criminals are responsible for their actions. You do the crime, you pay the time. When criminals go to prison or are killed, they too leave behind families. Often, innocent children. And as history has shown, the sins of the father are frequently visited upon the child -- sometimes twofold. What a shame!
And while Missy makes a good point about "noble cause" and "selfish cause," that does not address your question about the welfare of the children left behind.
So, your question should have really been, "What do we do about it?"

No screaming or whining here. Just some common observations. First cops, firemen, ambulance workers or building contractors, have the right to work, in the profession that they want to, and shouldn't have to fear that someone will shoot them. Granted a cop can be shot for trying to do his assigned duties, but then again, you can be in a bank trying to make a deposit and get shot as well. Does that mean that if you have a bank account that you have an inherent risk of being shot, and the solution would be not to have a checking account?
Criminals, on the other hand, are making a conscientious choice to use a weapon to commit a crime. To take something from someone else, without their permission, deny a person something or do something against society. The criminal has the choice of not committing the crime, doesn't he?

If someone has the evil in them to kill an officer they have the evil to do much worse. The fact that Officers know they may get killed in the line of duty, and yet they STILL do it day in and day out says something about the character and guts of these brave men and women! Their priorities are with the greater good (which is obviously something you don't get!) A criminal is just that, they broke the law and they are paying for it. Yes, it's sad that they leave families and loved ones behind but THEY got up that morning and made their mind up to do wrong.
Being someone that has lost 4 officers in the line of duty, i for one am offended at the attitude you take. If not for them, you wouldn't have the safety and freedoms you do. So be grateful

,. "Just want to illustrate the hypocricy of the behavior. If you put yourself in harm's way accept that reality and possible outcomes. If you can't, do something else."
Hypocrisy? Why are you bemoaning the fact that officers sometimes leave families behind, and make it seem OK that hoodlums do?
Why are you not asking this question directed at criminals, too?
Your intent and mindset is obvious. You don't have to deny.

First off - i come from a law enforcement family. my dad and all his brothers are cops..... they are in it for the love of the job and obviously not the money( because they are EXTREMELY UNDERPAID).and you better believe that they whine when an officer is killed b/c it could have been them and they know it could have been them they know the risks of the job before they even sign up but that doesn't give someone like you the right to down them for it. your probably sitting at some cushy desk somewhere not having the slightest worry about getting KILLED, SOMEONE SHOOTING OR STABBING YOU while your at work ... and that is YOUR DECISON that you are to much of a scared little wimp to get out there and protect your fellow citizens. and you know... if a criminal gets hurt or killed while they are being presude then so be it.. oh well.. one less piece of **** in the world because they made a concious decision to break the law however big or small..... they made the choice to be violent enough for someone to hit them with the baton or tase or shoot them and hell yea they deserve it. And for the criminal who is slain or jailed.... THEY MADE THAT DECISION!!! the welfare of the children they leave behind?? who cares?? look at the parental figure... they were headed to be criminals anyway with that kind of role model...... my belief is that you don't get to talk the talk if your not anywhere near brave enough to take the walk associated with it.

hmmmm.well, the idea of punishing the cop killers more then any other type of crime is due to the act against our leaders and society protectors....not meant to hurt your pride...
From a regular citizen that has had the same thoughts as you once upon a time.....
Why should anyone be treated different in the eyes of the law? Because they are our protectors and if hurting cops went without examples being made, there would be no control in our society...at least not the control we have now...

maybe because the cop is doing good, and the criminal is participating in selfish and destructive behavior that could hurt themselves their family and innocent bystanders. The criminals go out of their way to hurt people and the police go out of their way to protect people. They put their lives on the line to keep us and our families safe, the criminals could care less about you and me and our children. Big difference. So why don't you stop whining.

Well, let's see. We shouldnt cry over the death of a cop because they took a job and knew the risks. Same applies to a criminal when they leave little criminals behind. He pulled off a job and knew the risks so noone should cry for him. Not to mention the obvious things like victim vs suspect. Good vs evil, selfish wants vs unselfishness, etc.

When you take the role of an officer, you are sworn to hold up laws tht are incorporated to protect the public. You expect the code of ethics, the public you defend and the ones who train you to stand behind you. You are entitled to believe that. When the tide of public opinon turns on you, it's one thing. But when the law you are defending, turns on you and attempts to destroy the very things that was set in motion for the reason of protection and freedom, you have every right to "whine".
