Well, we got a table, top set from Melissa and Doug (toy co.) Before that I actually painted stove "burners on their play tabe and they pretended to cook on that. What do you want to make it out of? i suggest Craigslist to find a used one if you are not a woodworker by trade;-)

I think what your saying is you want to encourage your son to be open to doing things that make him well rounded. My mom always encouraged this out of my brother when he was growing up.. (yes he played with my little kitchen and vacumn...heehee) and you know what, he is a fantastic husband and father, who helps his wife cook clean raise the kids.. i really admire the type of man he is because he was raised to not be so biased agianst things that are typically considered female stuff.. so my son has his trucks. his power wheels and sandbox.. hes a typical little boy who yes does little boy stuff, but yes he has a kitchen set, a bbq toy and even a doll, idont see nothing wrong with it.. first though you can use what you have at home, tupperware, plastic spoons, spatulas.. pots whatever... get down on the floor and play with him.. Ps. i bought my son wayne plastic food (large enough to play with but not small enough to actually put in mouth) and its his favorite thing.. i make all the necesary sound effects and he laughs and "cooks for me".. ( plus i say to him things like ok, now before we cook we have to wash our hand.. and it gives me the oppurtunity to get a good handwashing out of him and teach him some hygiene.. ) You have to teach him the art of using his imagination.. thats the key, you can put the toy in front of him but if he dosent know what to do then hes not going to be interested. hope this helps.. Ps. dont listen to people who say your teaching him something wrong, your not. if every mother raised her sons to be that open minded then maybe wed all have less hassel getting help from our hubbies eh? hehehehe

Id say go to rummage sales and get a little tykes one, got ours for $10. They fade if out in the sun, but otherwise wear really well.
