I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE with a little over 120,000 miles on it. I'm having trouble with hesitation on acceleration (under 20 mph). At first, the car would only hesitate for a second when I would press on the gas, but now, it's gotten much worse, hesitating for as long as 5 to 10 seconds until I finally reach 20 mph...then it seems to run normally. What does this indicate and how do I fix it?

Could also be your transmission slipping and that would cost you $2700 to replace, don't waste time with a used transmission. I had to replace the tranny on my Maxima at 118,000 miles. My car wouldn't move in reverse just rev the engine, then in drive it was very sluggish to get going to speed. However, if you aren't having any issues with the car moving in reverse or any forward gear then that may not be the problem. My car wouldn't move in reverse just rev the engine, then in drive it was very sluggish to get going to speed. You definitely need to take your car to see a mechanic today! Check all your fluids too, could be something that simple.

Have a mechanic scan the on board computer for codes, also suggest the throttle position sensor.

How is your catalytic converter, or run some injector cleaner thru your next tank of gas.
