I take Ativan 0.5 mg tabs pretty much around the clock. Is this too much Ativan daily? I'm just worried about having to go through a horrible benzo withdrawal one day when I decide I want off this medication. I have a general anxiety disorder along with social anxiety disorder. I would appreciate answers from people who are qualified to answer such a question. Thanks to all!

ok, around the clock, how often do you take it, daily, every few hours? i was taking klonopin, and i started with a low dose like that, and if i would forget to take it i felt like crap. you will probably have withdrawal, but the best way to avoid it it to taper off very slowly, even breaking the tab in quarters if you have to and do it slowly. those meds suck really bad, i wish i never started them, very hard to stop. just don't take any more than you need to, and see how long you can go without taking them, just because they are prescribed to take every so many hours doesn't mean you should, but you can if you need it. try to be careful and only take them for as long as you absolutely need them, then discontinue them very slowly. even taking the lowest dose, if you take it for a while you can still have withdrawal. hope that helps - i don't want to scare you but i do want to stress the importance of stopping very gradually if you don't want to get sick or have rebound anxiety. good luck, you can email me if you have any other questions..

I was on 0.5mgs of Ativan and I was to take it 'as needed'. That did NOT turn out to be a good thing at all. It wasn't long before I needed more and more. It began as something I was supposed to take if I felt a panic attack coming on. It turned into a pill that I took constantly because if I didn't, I would HAVE a panic attack. I tried very hard not to over do it but I had to take 3 or 4 at a time to have any effect at all. I ended up going though a months supply in just over a week. I was immediately taken off that and put on Klonopin which I am not addicted to for some reason and I never feel I need to take more than prescribed.
A good friend developed a serious Ativan addiction and was taking it all day/night. She ended up in rehab and said the withdrawal was horrendous. She said she clawed at the walls and thought she was losing her mind.

No, it's not to much, esp if it's working for you. The thing with meds though is that they cover up a problem and not fix it which only delays the agony. Anxiety and social disorders are ones you CAN overcome and not have to live on meds. When the time is right for you, you should work on beating your disorders. I have it to, but I got sick of the numb feelings being on meds. I worked hard to be able to deal with my feelings when I started to get worked up, and when I was in a social situation I wanted to hide or bolt from. When you are ready, you're meds will be tapered down so you don't have any withdrawal and to see how you are handling it. Stopping you're meds abruptly is mental suicide. It's not worth it. I think what you're on and the dose sounds fine, as long as you're not a zombie. It is a strong med, I'm thinking you're anxiety is pretty severe. If I were you, I'd find a therapist you can really feel comfortable with and work at dealing and handling you're anxieties. It isn't anything that goes away forever, it might for a long time but it can come back on and off through out you're life. It isn't something that you cure, it's something that you handle. There are ways to deal with it and be a happy normal person. Good luck, if you ever have any questions feel free to email me.

around the clock meaning how much? It shouldnt exceed 4mg a day. As far as withdrawal symptoms go I didnt have any when I was on it and was taken off it for 6months. However some people do suffer from withdrawal symptoms when they have been on it long term.
Currently Im on Xanax now.

Considering they don't make .05mg Ativan, your question is obsolete.

I don't get questions like this! You are asking a question from the general public and try to qualify it with a statement of qualified personnel only. How would you know if they were qualified?
You should go by your doctor's recommendations. I know that with these types of drugs, they will give you an upper limit of what is too much for you to be taking. And as far as weaning yourself off, that should also be doctor supervised so that it is done properly with minimal effects.
