Good question. No one thing single handedly ruined Christianity. Having said that, I think the Book of Revelations played a big role in making the religion what it is by taking attention away from what Christ actually said while he was alive. There are also the books that were cut out of the original Bible by the Romans because it didn't jive with their political mission when they standardized Christianity. Read the Gnostic Gospels sometime.

The religion was also ruined by the fact that every big group is going to have a bunch of really stupid people who have their own agendas.

Ruined - no. It became chosen from one among the by way of fact it became: a million-have self assurance to be written by utilising the comparable hand that wrote John, even although in all likelihood no longer the disciple John 2-in step with what the Church wanted taught there are a number of different non-cannon "revelations" (the main outstanding being the 1st Apocalypse of James and the Coptic Apocalypse of Paul) obtainable which tell a particularly diverse tale. What bothers me with regards to the Apocalypse of John (Revelations) is that many look to apply it to justify their habit - if I sin and repent, i would be forgiven. Is it no longer greater advantageous to no longer sin, and hence no longer ought to repent? I, in my view, want Mark 13, the notice of Jesus with regards to the endtimes, to Revelations.

I would say that what has done more work than anything else to actively ruin Christianity would be Christians.
Especially televangelists.
Biggest hatemongers in America.
Christianity is a pretty good idea. Its statutes for the most part aren't bad (at least the New Testament stuff... Leviticus and Exodus are pretty raunchy and violent, and they condone slavery as long as you don't abuse your slave). It's a little fluffy for my tastes, but to each their own.

No. It's what people do with it that makes things bad. I could pick verses in other parts of the Bible that people have acted on that weren't good, though.

People seem to want to bad things, and they find thing in the Bible to rationalize their paranoia, murderous plots, et.

It's not because the Bible is telling them to do them, it's because they are confused in the first place.
