Firstly, save your documents with a .doc extension. if you have Microsoft Word and you want to use it to be the default application to open your word documents, right click on any word document on your machine, whilst holding down the SHIFT key. goto open with, then click CHOOSE PROGRAM. select Microsoft Word, then tick the always use the selected program... then click OK. you'll notice that the icons of word documents will change to that of Microsoft Word, and you will open them with Word, not Wordpad next time you just double click on it

On my PC, it is

Tools
Options
click the "file locations" tab
click "documents"
click "modify"
then indicate where you want to save

Change your default save location from the tools>options menu. Then save you file 'as...' and choose the extention .doc.
