Pelvic inflammatory disease is a chronic inflammation of the reproductive tract, usually caused by prolonged infection (chlamydia, gonorrhea, BV, etc.). The underlying infection has to be cured first (with antibiotic) to cure the PID.

PID can lead to infertility in as many as 1 in 5 cases, and those chances go even higher if she has had PID on multiple occasions. PID causes infertility by clogging the uterus and Fallopian tubes with scar tissue. When the tubes are blocked, eggs can travel to the uterus, so they can't get fertilized. Or if they do get fertilized, they get stuck in the tube, causing ectopic pregnancy. If the damage is in the uterus, the scar tissue can make it very difficult for the fertilized egg to implant, so she won't get pregnant, or she might miscarry if she does.

To determine whether her reproductive tract is okay, she will need to see her doctor for a full pelvic exam. Depending on the conditions, she may still be able to have kids naturally or via assisted reproductive technology (in vitro, surrogates, etc.).

P.I.D. stands for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. It can be treated, usually with antibiotics. If the condition were left untreated, or frequent episodes occur, it could possibly effect reproduction.
