Why children shouldn't be allowed to watch too much TV?

As said before, it does lead to obesity and does not promote a healthy lifestyle. But in my opinion, most importantly--

it limits creativity and imagination. The tv is doing all the imagination for you. You just zone out and hours go by. Outside you have to become a princess of an Indian tribe, or a cowboy trying to escape the robbers shooting at you. Nature, with its plain sticks and leaves, has to lend itself to your need for a rifle and a cave in which to hide. Many inventors of popular products have been kids and have made millions from their child inventions. Sitting in front of the tv just leads you to assume someone has already done it.

I'm in advertising and have many rules and regulations that we must follow on children's tv shows and the way ads must be made to be shown on children's shows. But with more parents letting tv babysit, it has made non-children shows into children's shows. They are not regulated by the same rules and regulations. Children cannot tell the difference between the show and the commercials.

One study shows that it leads to ADD in kids and shortens their attention span. While I'm not sure if I agree or disagree with that, I do see clearly how that can be possible as it is constantly changing images and blinking rapidly in front of your face. How would you ever be able to read a book that just sits there typed on a page?

Also, it limits their reading comprehension skills (more children do not pass that part of the End of Grade testing every year due to lack of exposure to books) and their vocabulary.

Children need structure and discipline in order to become well-rounded. They need reading comprehension skills to become educated members of society. They need their imagination to preserve childhood, a childhood which seems to shrink in each passing generation. TV does not foster any of these life skills. There are whole new worlds to be opened inside a book (both real and fantasy) that just are not offered on current tv shows and a kid in front of a tv will never know those worlds.

Too much of anything is bad. TV in moderation is okay, but excessive amounts have been linked to childhood obesity. Have your children pick 1 or 2 shows a day to watch, and set the limit at that. There are plenty of other activities to do, especially with the weather getting warmer.

i know that people say that it can cause obesity and also that it affects the children's imagination but that is not aways the case. my 2 and 3 year old do watch alot of cartoons in the morning mostly on the learning channel. i think it is somewhere about 3 hrs or so. sometimes they watch more, while im doing chores and other stuff around the house. it hasn't affected their weight or their imagination any at all. the are right where they should be on their weight. and we go outside everyday too, when its nice out, and they love playing outside too and they have a great imagination while they are playing. and when we are doing arts and craft stuff. as they love to do anything like that. so i don't think that it always has negative affects on kids.

Because they will become lacy and then can gain more weigth than the normal... They can be less active in sports and they can learn bad things from TV too... That's why I allowed my kids to watch tv for an hour during school days and on weekends they are allowed 3 hrs but not together because they watch movies and movies don't last only and hour but they are very active kids that like to play outside too... But it depends on hoe parents educate their kids !!!!

Reality disconnect; stunts independent thinking, creativity and imagination = brain mush!
Not to mention lack of movement/exercise and time outside w/fresh air!
What is "too much"? Some television is fine...just place a limit and don't use it as a sitter.
