We recently rescued a 3 month old male pug puppy...turned out he had all sorts of medical problems, so we had him at the vet for a while, now he is home with us, we already have an 8 month old pug and he does not like the new puppy AT ALL. The puppy bites him, tries to steal his toys and food, etc. I don't know what to do, this little puppy has been thru so much, I don't want him to have to find yet another home, BUT I don't want our precious 8 month old baby pug to feel like we've replaced him, he acts so depressed now that we've got this puppy.. :*(
The new dog seems like he loves us,but I know all puppies are lovable so he'd probably be happy in a different environment right? Because right now the puppy is so mean to the old dog we are having to keep him in our master bathroom constantly so they don't fight/bite...I am so confused?! What to do help please!

Its quite normal for the older dog to be off with a new pup, up till now he has been the only one, now he's going to have to compete for attention. You have to stand back a bit and let them get on with it, just supervise them and don't leave them alone together yet.The older dog will tell the youngster off he is the top dog and the newby has to learn that.It will take time but don't give up yet they will probably end up best of friends.

So puppy has to learn to be nice just like any toddler or do you expect a 2 yr old human to have refined society matron manners? Typically the older dog will tell him off or even give him a good thrashing which may LOOK nasty but rarely results in bloodshed. Don't separate them constantly, it just means they never learn to get along. Supervise them when together at first so you can intervene "HEY! CUT IT OUT" (TOO BOTH) if things get too boisterous.

Sadly I think you made up your mind to sentance your dog to a liftime of solitary confinement because you can't deal with dog/dog interaction

Sometimes it takes a longer time for two dogs to get used to eachother and bond, but after they do, they're usually inseperable. Getting a new puppy doesn't mean the older dog gets left behind, it just means to give them both the amount of attention you were giving the older dog before. Dogs will fight sometimes before they give up and learn to like eachother.

Seems your having issues with confinement as well...you need to do alot of Pug research shutting that baby in the basement, and the bedroom all the time is the worst thing in the world you can do to him....Crates! Crate them both, and the crates need to set where they can see out, and see eachother. Social skills are learned both by humans and by dogs...monitor their time together, and intervene when necessary. Make it a point to spend quality time with the older dog, all by it's self...if it means crating the pup for a nap while you take the older one for a walk, or special play time..then that's what you need to do. He will let the pup know when he's had enough. Limit their time together, increasing it a little each time. Eventually they will learn to get along and will probably end up being great friends....Pugs are very loyal dogs....known to attach themselves to one particular person...as do they hate to be alone. Please please don't shut him in a room anymore.....I suspect the introduction may have not been a pleasant one right from the start....with lots of help from you...your the "pack leader".....they will learn to get along just fine.....Good Luck

PLEASE NEVER GIVE UP ON ANY ANIMAL, THEY MAY TAKE ALOT OF YOUR TIME AND ENERGY BUT ALL WILL BE WORTHWILE IN THE END. USE BABY GATES SO THEY CAN GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER BUT NOT HURT EACHOTHER, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR GONE. SPEND TIME ON FLOOR WITH BOTH AT THEIR LEVEL, TALK THEM THROUGH PROBLEMS, GIVE BOTH TREATS WHE NGOOD. EQUAL TIME WITH BOTH IS VERY IMPORTANT, SO ONE DOESNT GET JEALOUS. GOOD LUCK!!
