Obviously I keep away from this person - but the person is married into my family so I can't escape them totally

I have been experiencing some really bad luck for ages now and there was a black feather standing up in the middle of my garden. Am I being cursed? A curses even real? How do you break a curse?

This is a serious question, if you have knowledge on this subject, I appreciate you sharing it.

I have never cursed anyone yet. I have had no reason to. If this claims it in then they may be a little unstable. Claiming that you have cursed someone is what startes the curse. Then the person begins to see bad things happen (which happen all the time) and they automatically think it is a curse. Well unless they are well verse in manipulating spirits then they can curse you. Even if you are cursed the worse that can happen is a having a run of "bad luck". The intent eventually wears off of the the negativity that was sent is no longer effective. I would not worry about.

The black feather is probably from a bird. It feel off while the bird was flying by the house. Feathers are never used for curses.

First, calm down. Most that I have come across who even hint at casting curses are merely bragging about something they don't know anything about. A lot of people have a superstitious fear of someone casting a curse... which leads them to think they truly are cursed. But you're not cursed. Magic does NOT work that way at all. If you think you are cursed you will act as if you are cursed. Bad luck is just that, bad luck... some of us have to deal with it on a daily basis =)

Spells work on the mind first and foremost. Those who do spells, even for the benefit of another, are merely doing a "prayer" within a ritual. It is merely the caster wanting a specific result and trying to focus their energy on that result. This does not mean that sparks are flying or people are suddenly getting rich from a spell.... Curses only work if you think they will work.

It's all about the power of thought isn't it. If someone's told they're cursed and believe it to be true, it'll be like a self-fulling prophecy. They will no doubt put all bad luck down to the curse and attract bad things their way.
Life is full of ups and downs. When you're down, you are more likely to believe you're cursed. Tell yourelf every day that life is going to get better and better and break the cycle.

Curses are not real. However, if you believe they are, they could possibly exert a hold over you but it would all be in your mind.

Actually, the only real kind of curses are genetic. The person you wrote about, for instance, was cursed by being born with their head up their own assh*le.

Rubbish. Curses are not real. IMHO, If you really believe you have been cursed then subconsciously you make it happen yourself. In the same way as if you think something bad is going to happen to you then it will but only because you set the ball rolling.

as a practioner of witchcraft, a black feather is a symbol of creation, rebirth, etc.. it is NOT a curse.. if it bothers you, simply remove the feather.
The person who lays claim to cursing others is simply trying to scare people and feel superior.. this is not the way of the witch. This is a childish, immature person who doesn't feel good about him/herself and is trying to control others through fear.
The only way you are cursed whatsoever is in your own mind. Simply stop believing that you are, and watch how things change for the better for you.
Blessings,
K

No, curses aren't real, but they're a great way to scare the sh*t out of the weak-minded. The power of suggestion works wonders, and superstitious folks are easily taken in. Religionists like to say curses are real, too, but given their belief system in the first place, it's easy to understand why they would feel that way. The best thing I could recommend to someone who feels "cursed" is a long series of therapy sessions.

*Edit* ghandi said it better. Well done (not to mention hilarious).

Most of the "curses" are not for real. But in some very rare instances, they can be ... I personally take it very seriosly.
If you are convinced that something "uncouth" might be going on in your life, find a good wicca practicioner and consult him. I would look for a someone who has years of experience, who is not vain, who doesn't sing his own praises and who is, above all, kind and compassionate. I would follow my gut feeling and the word of mouth. Blessed be.

It's my own opinion that curses only work when the person who has been "cursed" knows they have been cursed and believes in it.

They do work, but mostly through the power of suggestion. The people who say it's a load of crap obviously haven't read up on psychosomatic illnesses, your mind can cause you to develop diseases. Through the power of suggestion, a person can plant ideas in your head that slowly start to become manifest in your life, causing you to become sick, have accidents, etc. Through the power of suggestion, these negative effects may also be removed.
