Alot of people think the dog will need worming when they act out this behaviour but if you are frequently worming your pet like is advised (3monthly worming) then it's most likely to anal glands irritating them. These need to be manually emptied by a vet. The vet may be able to teach you how to do it. Some dogs have problems with their anal glands and need them regularly emptied, but most will naturally empty them when they go to the toilet. I lay my money on it that most cases of 'scooting' their bums on the floor is the anal gland problems.

DOgs have anal glands (or anal sacs) on either side of the anus. These glands can get impacted with oil and feces and need to be emptied (expressed). This is something that should happen normally every time the dog "poops", but if the opening to the gland gets clogged, (from poor diet, etc.) the glands swell and hurt and itch. They drag their butt trying to itch or rub it... If left untreated, they can become infected.
You can have the glands checked by a vet or a dog groomer. This is not something you want to try to do if you have no experience. (You can do serious damage to the dog.)

Wow- some people really have no idea. It does not mean that your dog has worms. When dogs "scoot", it USUALLY means that they need their anal sacs released. You can ask your vet or a groomer to do it. It can also just mean that your dogs bum, is, well, itchy. But most of the time, as i said, their anal sacs are bothering them. Do not attempt to do anything at home. You need a vet or groomer to do it, and its a somewhat yucky process- but very common in many dogs.

It could be worms but won't necessarily be, but my suggestion would be that they either have an itch they can't reach, or they have a cling-on that's irritating them. If you're brave enough to have a look you might find out what is going on.
Edit: Oooh, never thought about anal glands needing to be emptied, that's a possibility too. Hold your nose when the vet does the deed because it's not pleasant.

It's a bit gross - they need their anal glands emptying. The vet can do this for you but if you're brave enough arm yourself with loads of tissues, open a window (coz it stinks) get your dog to stand still pull the tail over their back, get a wodge of tissues and squeeze either side of the bumhole (that's where the glands are). Loads of evil smelling brown-black goo will come out and your dog will thank you for it though you may not feel the same!!!

Normally it's because their Anal Glands are full, and need to be expressed by a vet, who can show you,how to do it yourself, because it will probably happen again and again. It's a common problem! You should also have your dog checked for worms.

Dogs do that because they either have worms/intestinal parasites or their anal glands need to be expressed. A veterinarian can check the anal glands and express them. They can also look at a fecal sample to check for worms.

dogs mainly do this when the need worming. Go to the vet and get worming tablets - your vet will also advise you on how often the dog should be wormed. Only buy worming tablets from the vet (not a pet shop) - they are the best ones.
