I have 4-6k to spend on a car, although I appreciate this will be secondhand, I need something which is economical, similar to the yaris 5-dr 1.4 which is a little higher up than other cars due to a bad back :o(

But I don't want anything which will loose it's value to quickly

I know this is a lot to ask someone but I'm at a loose end!

Any suggestions?

VW Polo. VWs tend to hold their value i think. Or why not a yaris as you've suggested it?

You can buy a loty of car for £6000. Why not buy a decent diesel estate like I did for £750. It is a ford escort 1800cc diesel which does 43mpg or more and will not really depreciate anymore. I have had 2 years out of it already with no problems and will no doubt get five more. I won't lose anything on the car at all. If you did this you could afford to take your family on several holidays as well. By the way the cost of parts for Ford cars is very low indeed. I have had a few different makes ranging from Audi's which are good but veryexpensive to maintain, and citroens which are ok but again expensive. I would definitely go for a Ford. Good luck.

You need something that is a little taller than average car so I would suggest that you have a look at MPVs - Citroen Berlingo/Xsara Picasso, Peugeot Partner Combi, Renault Megane Scenic/Kangoo etc

Go with the Yaris, my mum has one and she loves it. The whole family drive Japanese cars - we have an excellent reliability track record with them, they are so much more reliable than other cars.

This means they do not lose value quickly either. If you buy second hand, the major chunk has already gone.

Have a look at any of the following, all slightly larger than a Yaris, but with high seating positions and decent economy (especially in diesel versions):

Mazda 2
Ford Fusion
Mitsubishi Colt
Honda Jazz (no diesel version, but petrol engine is more efficient than most).

2000-2002 Civic.
BUT NO VW! If driving is on your list of priorities, that is.
But no matter what you buy, I strongly suggest you do the inspection by a LOCAL INDEPENDANT company like this one:

4-6K? aren't you sure how much you have, or will some of that amt be in the form of a loan?

Find a Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or Mazda, have it checked by a mechanic, and you'll have MANY years of trouble free driving if you do regular maintenance.

go for either a vauxhall or vw.

they both hold their value, cheap on insurance depending what size engine and you can choose what model you like best.

golfs hold their value very good but a corsa is cheap.

also, go for a diesel as that will help on your insurance.
