I won't be joining the Military (USMC) for a while but when I do, i'll be around 21-23. Would I be considered "old", would I be considered the old guy?

Well I know I won't be that old, but will I likely be the oldest guy in bootcamp, and looked at as old, while im there?

I wish I could join when im 18, but I plan on becoming and Officer and the quickest way to become one is to have a College Degree.

Officers get more pay and more/better benefits.

Officers must acquire a bachelors degree before going to Officer Training School, therefore they typically join at 21-23. As an officer you'll get more money, but benefits are about the same - slightly less as an officer (better lodging maybe)

PS Bachelors degree can be waved in some cases, provided you agree to finish it within 2 years or accept demotion to enlisted. Personally I wouldn't go this route, its way to hard to work on your degree while serving - you'll be kinda busy.

No, you'll be fine. My big bro went through Army basic last year. At 23 I thought he'd be the oldest out of all 90 guys. The oldest guy was 43! He worked in some sort of cool technology and the Army really wanted him to work for them so he joined. But at 24 now my bro will be one of the oldest in flight school this year.

I enlisted when I was twenty-two. There were some guys that were prior serivce and going back in at age 30. During the draft era you would have been considered "old." But not in a volunteer army where the average age I think is 21.

You might be.....Most Boots are 18-20, so you might be on the edge.
I had a guy that was 37, when I was in Boot, he shipped over from 8 years in the Army , and 4 in the Navy. His plan was to spend time in each branch...
Don't wory 21-23 is not old...

When you have 30 years in the US Army then your considered OLD! If they have a draft boot will be filled with people up to age 38 if they make the changes they intend to make!

Officers don't GO to Boot Camp. since that 4 year degree is required, everybody will be around the same age.. or older.

Not really. You'll be older than the average recruit, but that works in your favor. You will (presumably) have wisdom and maturity your fellow Marines lack. Just make sure you stay in shape and keep out of legal/financial trouble, which is where the older recruits usually have more problems than their fresh-out-of-school counterparts.

"OLD" in the military generally refers to the number or years in service. I am considered old Army.... I have 24 years. Usually after about tweleve to fifeteen years.... you are considered old in the military.

Why are you waiting? You should drop everything and join now while you're still young.
