It is said that the fear of snakes is hard-wired into the human brain. Early man had to deal with snakes in the wild. And their often fatal bites ensured anyone who did not learn to fear them died a painful death.
Which is why snakes are often seen as antagonists in stories and legends. In Christian religion, a snake was the reason Adam and Eve were casted out of Eden.

People have phobia's, but I think fear of snakes is pretty normal. Just the way they creep or crawl. I have an unnatural fear of black hornets. The hair on my arms stands on end whenever one is in the vicinity. I swear they get bigger every year and make it a special point to harass me. I know its just me. Some people have a fear of going over bridges, which I kind of laugh at, and they shake their head whenever I freak out over a hornet.

Plenty of critters can kill you, so they're not more dangerous than, say, scorpions.

As for fear... that's a psychological issue, possibly also having to do with religious upbringing (the snake being one of the bad guys in the bible)

because you have never got to know them, very few are venomous, and the constrictors big enough to be a threat to you are pretty hard to find unless you go looking for them. It is a common phobia so don't feel lonely!
