Garlic mushrooms - mmm... breaded mushrooms in a garlic/mayonnaise type of dip. I have it every time. Or big flat mushrooms topped with stilton and parmesan cheese. (a bit of a mushroom theme going on here I think!). My partner always has mussels in creamy garlic & wine sauce with bread & chips! Hope this helps!

You want something easy and not too intricate to put together quickly.
Some simple ideas:
Pate with toast - you can buy lots of very good pates direct from the supermarket
Parma ham with melon
Prawn cocktail; shred lettuce into individual bowls, add some defrosted prawns, cover with Rose Marie sauce (half ketchup, half mayonnaise, dash of Tabasco), chill for a couple of hours
Layer beef tomato, advocado slices and mozzarella on individual plates, make a dressing with olive oil, garlic, white wine vinegar and mustard powder and drizzle over. Chill for 30 minutes and then serve with crusty bread.
You could also make a very simple but hearty vegetable soup by frying onion, garlic, celery together in a little oil, adding vegetable stock and lots of different ypes of vegetables, boil then simmer untoil veggies are all soft, then puree with aq blender.

my favourite starter ever was half a roasted pepper, with halloumi cheese and maybe some bread came with it- i can't quite remember but it tasted fantastic. asparagus with balsamic vinegar and shaved parmesan is also lovely. a good home made soup should always be on a menu- the more interesting the flavour the better. oooohhh i could go on forever!

when i go to a restaurant i like having something cold for a starter like:
melon + parma ham
slices of smoked salmon + lemon juice
especially prawn cocktail or tuna cocktail.
you could try some of these starters.

Absolutely love deep fried squid rings with garlic mayo or a really good pate with hot toast - too often though the toast doesn't come hot but when it does yum
