I would like policemen and women to answer this one........

It is really irritating, they get locked up, they kick them to the
kerb, they do the same things over and over again, knowing
full well that they will be caught and that they are pushing their
luck....................

The term is career criminals. The problem is that the reason that a lot of prisoners get out and keep committing crimes is because they are given no skills while in prison to help them succeed when they get out. This is not to baby them because they have had a lot of that in their life obviously. It is just the prison system lacks a lot of funding, so prisoners are just sitting around doing nothing productive the whole time they are locked up. When they get back to the outside world, a lot of them are not able to get jobs because of their criminal backgrounds. Those who do usually lie on applications, or get jobs that do not pay enough to support them. So then the recidivate and go back to the only way they know how to make money which is the illegal way. So if this is bothering you enough, write your politicians and tell them to invest more money into the prison systems. Cause think about it, a person who was locked up in the 60s and gets out in the 90s is going to be a nervous wreck trying to get a job. There has been so much that has changed in that time.

I am not a policeman, but I have lived in the ghetto all my life, which may give me a little insight into this matter.
The reason for the persistence of the criminals is due to the fact that the system is paid by the amount of criminals they incarcerate. Upon release, the inmate knows nothing more than when he/she was incarcerated.
I think the best way to decrease the recidivism of criminals is to provide a way to better their way of life. Anyone who has dealt with the criminal justice system will tell you that education is the only way to make a person realize that crime is not the way out of the ghetto. Forcing a drug user to take drug classes will not take that person off drugs: the person must want to change. The same goes for criminals: without hope, a man does what is necessary to survive, whether it is crime or not depends on whether he or she can see a way to better the life they have been given.

Some people need to be hit in the head with a 2x4 before they see the light. I sometimes think it's a mixture of stupidity, brazenness, sloth (why work when you can steal/victimize?) and just plain old not giving a good goddamn.
Most of these mooks don't give a tinker's cuss for anything. that is until caught and told by a judge that this trip will mean prison time. This is when the system is further manipulated by this type because despite being guilty, they insist upon a jury trial. If they realize that opting for a jury will screw them to the wall, the plead under the "Alford Doctrine". For those who aren't familiar with this (Connecticut) it means that you admit the state has enough evidence to prosecute you and secure a conviction but you do not admit guilt. Its just that the preponderance of evidence will send you up the river. Usually two to three trips to prison straightens a goodly amount out. Of course they're now relegated to work pumping gas for the rest of their lives because who wants a convicted felon on the payroll? So they're still a burden.
Bring back the salt mines and workhouses I say!

The answer to this question is the courts and politicians. people who fight for the rights of criminals make more noise than those who want punishment, just watch the protstors at executions, so the politicians make weaker punishments and the courts go ahead and give out the lowest sentncing they can due to the jails and prisons being overfilled with rapists and murderers who should have been juiced. as far as the dip talking about not being enough jobs.... the criminals are too dumb to work a real job, they would rather risk hurting someone than to be a man and work. criminals are not men they are like rats, a disease. fry them all

Plain old arrogance is a large part of the equation. They just think they are so clever that they will never get caught. Repeat offenders often don't even change the way they commit their crimes, which, of course, is a real help to the investigators. When they are caught they just assume someone ratted them out or the cops just got lucky. Fine with me, dumb criminals makes my job much easier.

Unfortunately, they commit crime more than they get caught. The courts are very easy on criminals probably because the jails are too full or because the poor criminal was abused as a child. Once you get away w/ something you get cocky and continue to do it. You have to remember the police are the bad guys to a lot of people including judges. As long as the crime stays out of some people's neighborhoods it seems to be ok.

The two common reasons why criminal continues to commit crime even after they were released from the prison were financial and mental. Unless they can be financially stable, if not, they will have to resort to crime for basic survival. Many criminals always believe they can get away from the acts.

Criminals persist due to their unmet needs - emotionally, physically, materially, etc. Many of them are helpless people, so they recourse to commit crimes. If there are enough job opportunities and fairness in each ones nation - perhaps criminals would be reduced.
