English is not a "popular" language...most people don't choose to learn English because they like it (actually most people would say they hate it if you asked them) but because they have to...the economic and cultural power of the United States has forced them to learn it and use it...it's a matter of survival rather than popularity...The fact that the English conquered so many lands could explain why it is spread all over the world but not why so many people choose to learn it as a second language which I think is your question...there is a difference between "popular" and "widespread"...Spain also conquered many lands; as a matter of fact, except for the United States, Canada, Brazil and a few small countries, practically all the American continent speaks Spanish...yet you won't see many people learning Spanish as a second language...why would they have to? Spain is not a great political or economic power...they choose to learn English because it's the language of business and technology and knowing it will increase their chances of success

You ca'nt say it is popular,it is need of the present times being International Language. Still in Europe Germans and French's do not use much English. But , yes we Indians feel proud to speak or write English even our Film Stars they are popular because of Hindi Movies but in all functions they speak in English and same way our Leaders even our Laluji also try to speak in English .It is not popularity but it is our mentality.

There are many versions of the English Language.Every country stylizes it to suit their needs .England leads the field in the Language Learning Phenomenon in the world .Much of it has come from Englands ever open door to other cultures settling here. Our only requirement politically is that people should learn the English Language.Hence the reason for its popularity. The Americans speak American /English, so do the Brazilians. When students come to England on study holidays they often wish they resided here. Many TEFL Teachers travel world wide to teach English. Those students invariably then choose to settle in England. Many of our different races come to claim political asylum. Many major Countries have closed their doors to the immigrants and visitors .This only strengthens Englands position .But realistically many people from Britain work abroad or live permanently in other countries. We have to be sensible about the amount of people who come to stay in the country because we will end up with overcrowding and lack of funding for the needs of the British public.

denyseo has a point.
Also, it's because of its grammar: while it's true that the pronunciation can be a pain in the neck, the grammar is pretty simple.and easy to grasp (i.e. - weak noun inflections and simple verb patterns), so it's less of a struggle to learn.
In my spare time, I give my mom some English tips (she's a Spanish speaker); she understands the mechanics of English, but the pronunciation is what drives her insane, lol.
Even when the USA's world power status is done, I think English will stay a global language for quite a long time.

English is popular because the British colonised so many places historically, they spread English.

French was also widespread as an international language for a while, and is still the international language of the postal service etc.

I would say because the English language
was the spoken language of the British
Empire who ruled non speaking English countries all over the earth and when they
gone, the language was left behind and those countries had to use it in order to
communicate with the out side world.

Very good question. I believe it is because english words, though difficult to learn at first, becomes easier when you go on.

English has many words and each word may have a synonym, so ideas can be clearly put across with this.

If you look at other languages, you will find that their vocabulary loses out to english, so english is very popular
