It is nothing more than a control measure. There is a hierarchy and there are rules governing how you should interpret the Bible, how you should dress, act, and even how much you should give. Some churches such as the West Angeles Church of God in Christ make you bring a copy of your W-2 so they can ensure that they are getting EXACTLY 10% of your income. God forbid if you should have things like bills, car payments, etc. That doesn't figure into the equation. Some of these rules even extend to your life outside of the church. There are rules as to who you can date, marry, where you can hang out, etc. Some religions even attempt to influence your political beliefs.
I also think religion has become a business. Some churches advertise on TV and like any other business they compete with one another to put butts in the seats. More butts=more money. Look at the churches that televise their services on TV. When I lived in Houston there was one where the services are televised nationally. People flock there in droves to go to that church.
That is why I don't go to church. I believe in God and I pray. I am college educated and can read the Bible for myself. I don't need someone to tell me how to interpret it. I try to do right by people. I share what I have with others and as far as charity goes, I try to give of myself through service as opposed to giving money. I also don't need a group of people to tell me how to dress, act, think, or pick my friends and hangouts.

I'm a Chrisian and I don't like the word itself. The word 'religion' has been used to describe all sorts of things that God never said to do. Religion to many people is right out front, where everyone can see it. Leaving nothing to the realtionship that really is the key to knowing God. Practicing Christianity the right way leaves out a lot of the preconcieved notions that may be carried in the attempt to get God's attention.

My thoughts are that it is not religion you need but a relationship with God the creator, so how do we do that?
We need his Holy spirit to come live in us and then you are having a relationship day by day as his spirit living in you leads you and guides you and blesses your life, all religions with out God holy spirit is just a club or cult, a group of religious activity and traditions of man, with out his spirit you got nothing!
here is how you get it:

We are God. All Living creatures in the Universe are God. Messages we have received from God and/or Jesus have been sent back in time to us from ourselves and also from superior beings living elsewhere in the Universe in order to teach us how to survive and to evolve into higher beings. God is our collective conciousness and we are all one.

That it doesn't really accomplish anything. It can't save you. Only Jesus can.
