The crime in Eugene is typical for a city it's size. You must remember that the "U.S. average" includes municipalities of all sizes in the equation. You will find most large cities are considerably higher than the national average.

Property crime in Eugene is probably on a par with larger cities, while violent crime is probably less than larger cities. Also, there will be, as in all cities, areas in the city where the crime rate is higher than others.

The smaller towns around Eugene will have proportionately less crime, as crime increases in more densely populated areas.

Just remember that it's a college town full of potheads. I have heard though that Eugene is safer than Springfield though.
