I'll give you the classic fighter pilot answer: I am. Now that we have the humor aside, I would have to name Chuck Yeager and Bob Hoover. Both of them are extraordinary!

How can anyone know? What is best? Some bush pilot who can land up the side of a mountain or on a sand bar in a river? Maybe the best is some carrier pilot who can land on a pitching deck in virtually zero visibility? Chuck Yaeger is good, he has an excellent attitude. Bob Hoover is also a thoroughly outstanding pilot. Alex Henshaw did with a Lancaster some of what Bob Hoover did with a Shrike Commander.
Looks like the best aerobatic pilot in 2006 was Alexander Kurylev in a Su-29, maybe it's him? He's certainly the best at doing very unusual things this year.

This is a question that is almost impossible to answer. What fighter pilot in what war, what realm, is the best bomber pilot, best air transport pilot, best aerobatic pilot, etc.? For instance Hugh Chambliss is the champion Red Bull pilot but he would probably wrinkle a 747.

having been in the military for thirty years I can assure you that no self respecting fighter pilot will ever answer that question other than "me, of course" think about it, they are trained to fly against and eliminate an opponent who is equally equipped and motivated to eliminate him, how could you possibly do that if YOU didn't believe you were the best ever. Having said all that, I have met Gen Yeager and it was a real pleasure, but I have personal knowledge of the fantastic flying capabilities of one Robert "Rooster" Reichert of the "Air Dogs" TV series, it would take a tremendous amount to convince me that he is not the only one worthy of that title.

I would have to say Eric Hartman, German WW2 ace 352 confirmed victories, No one has ever come close. If you wonder how, Luftwaffe pilots were not rotated out of combat for R and R,or transferred to training units. they Flew with no limit to amount of missions (as did the USAF and RAF). Most of the top German Aces died before the end of the war. On the allied side Dick Bong, (40 kills) . RAF Sailor Malan (25+kills). There are others of course. Modern era Gordon Cooper, Last Man to go into space alone (Mercury project)

I'm not sure if he is the "best" pilot in the world, because I don't know about every pilot out there.......but my personal favorite is Gen. Chuck Yeager.

Captain Eric "Winkle" Brown. Scottish test pilot. Flew 487 different types many on test flights and completed 2407 deck landings. Both records that are unlikely to topple. first deck landing of a multi engined aircraft, and first deck landing of a jet. A legend, but not American so unheard of over there.

Personally, I think Chick Yeager is.
However there is a saying:
"A pilot that does not consider himself the best in the business is in the wrong business."
Hereby, I must say ME....hehe

The fellow who retires alive.
When I flew from Flagstaff to Vegas on a cramped, noisy charter flight and landed safely...I would have to say that she was the best pilot in the world.
