Is it REALLY possible to take someone to jail for stealing a candy bar or were they just trying to mess with me? It was worth 65 cents...and I have no other criminal record. They didn't fine me or take me to jail, but changed their minds about 5-10 minutes after TALKING about taking me to jail, or getting picked up by my parents. Like hell I was going to ask my parents to pick me up...so I ended up paying for the candy bar. But were they just trying to freak me out, or is that really possible?
(I don't need to know that's it's bad to steal. I know that. I would just like to know if it's possible to go to jail for stealing a 65 cent candy bar)

Luckily my parents don't even know about it. I was about to call my dad when they let up on me. But still...they let murderers and rapists go free and I would go to jail for a candy bar? For whomever said that my priorities are messed up, I say that the laws priorities are messed up. 65 cents vs. the death of a human being....
By the way, does anyone know what juvenile hall is like? Luckily I don't...just wondering. Is it like jail at all? Since I'm a minor (14) I wouldn't be going to an actual jail (I think) so....

SGT.D....Yes, I'd rather go to jail than let my parents know about that. My dad used to be a cop and if he knew I did something that stupid he'd love to beat the crap out of me. Of course, I can't ask him if I could go to jail for that or it would arouse suspicion.

Any offense from a Class C. misd to a Felony is an arrestable offense if they really want to.
Would that happen, more than likely not unless you really really pis* them off.
But they could have cut you a citation for sure.
Lucky you!

You will not be go to the jail due to your age, but you will still be charged in court for theft. Stealing of $650 gold bar or a 65 cents candy bar, both are theft.
And you shouldn't have use murderer being let free as an excuse for yourself. In view of an law enforcer, they certainly wish to put all murderers behind bar. You are saying that certainly shown that you are not remorseful over what you had done.
You should be punished for the crime you did.

Yes, When I was about 13 a friend and I did something similar. Stealing is stealing in the eyes of the law.... If the store wants to press charges they can regardless of the amount. My friend and I were arrested and taken to a holding cell, our parents were called,( and quite mad I might say for the stupidity of our crime)...we had to go to some classes on why it is bad to steal (very very boring) then we had to do so many hours of community work as punishment...... I think they were trying to scare you enough that hopefully you would not do it again, but they could have pressed charges, be thankful they didn't because you would have bin given a juvenile record..... and next time they will not go so easy...

It depends on where you are and some other things.

Firstly, you can be arrested for stealing a 65cent candy bar. It is a crime, and the store owner has the right to press charges. Which means, you can be handcuffed, taking to a holding cell, formely charged, taken before a judge, who will decide if you will be released on bail or remanded in custody.

Shoplifting is a crime, and actually a lot of things are shoplifted. Often people are caught with one or 2 small items, but to discourage shoplifting many large chain stores will press charges. So it is no joke.

As for punishment, it is highly unlikely that you would obtain a jail sentence for such a small crime and a first offence.

They wouldn't have thrown you in jail for stealing a candy bar. The jails are so full now they release non-violent offenders and drug dealers. But, if you make it a habit of stealing other more expensive items you'd end up in juvenile court and locked up in a juvie hall or if an adult, end up being a roommate with someone who might find you "very cute".

You need to be in a detention center, maybe your attitude would change. Petty theft is still a crime. The store owner has to pay the purveyor for the candy, so what gives you the right to take it?? And you had the money? You degraded yourself so that's why they let you go, but you didn't get away with anything, but I doubt you'll understand that.

Will you go to jail for stealing a candy bar? No, because you are a juvenile. If you were a legal adult you could though.

Your father should kick the living **** out of you. I think I'll look up your I.P. address, follow up on it and call him to let him know what you did.

You're a horrible individual.
Your priorities are all out of whack.
Apparently you DO NEED to know why it's bad to steal.
But you'll learn the hard way.

And Yes, you can go to jail for it. In fact in Indiana, anything 1.00 and over is now a felony.

So next time, grab 2 and screw up the rest of your life.

Yes, it's legally possible. Theft is theft, no matter how much the item is worth. The law does not state that any theft under a certain dollar amount doesn't count.

It's not the price of the candy bar that matters, its the crime of shoplifting, and yes they could detain you and they could call your parents. If you are as afraid of letting your parents pick you up as you say you are, you better knock that crap off or they may be picking you up at the Police station next time around.
