I went to a very tasteful wedding recently and the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom both wore lovely black gowns. It all comes down to what the bride will accept of her wedding party.

yes the "Mother-of-the-Bride may wear a black gown for a formal after 5 pm wedding.
black is not "usually" worn at a wedding held before 6 PM
but many old traditions and ideas have gone by the wayside.

If its an evening wedding, the bride doesnt mind, and the dress has sparkle or otherwise is festive-looking, yes.
If not, go with a dark blue or deep plum with sparkle.
Either way, a colorful clutch and shiny jewelry are a must! Maybe find a clutch or purse in the bridal party's color.

What does your daughter think? Her opinion is what you shoudl really consider. However I will say this. When I have seen mothers wearing black to their kids wedding, and its not the color of the wedding, I and alot of people, think its worn because the mother isnt happy wth the marriage. So be aware that some people will look at it in this light instead of looking at it as just a very pretty and flattering dress.
Good luck

yea my mom wore a georgeous black and white one to my wedding this past weekend, she looked stunning! It's really up to the bride tho, I said no black until I saw her in that dress, it was toooo perfect for her.
If you wanna see a pic of it, I have a slideshow up on my myspace page that has a pic of her in it with the family, shes the one by the groom when you get to the family pic, also, my number 2 friend has a pic of her with my mom as her default pic so you can see her dress their too...

Well, if the Bride doesn't care, why should you?
Almost anything is fine to wear to a wedding. (As long as you don't wear white, because that represents the bride's purity and is considered rude for other people to wear at a wedding. Blah.)

I would !! .. and wouldn't see a problem with it, its the 'older generation' that will turn their nose up at it. Stuff tradition, I mean who wears black at funerals these days!
Otherwise I would ask the bride if it was ok first maybe ........ since it will be their wedding photos ..

It is not a tacky question but I think it would be tacky for the mother of the bride to wear black.

my wedding colors where a teal and black and was in the evening i asked that both my mom and my husbands wear black so it would all match and they looked very nice since they went with evening looks not funeral looks so it was very classy and no one seemed shocked because they were obvious evening/party wear and they matched the wedding party!

I dont think its tacky as long as it doesnt look like a funeral dress, maybe wear some white pearls with it, and all is good!
