The Elephant, always has been, I've known it since I was a kid. The biggest reason for me is that they are so maternal, they adopt fallen mothers children, and when there is threat, all the females surround the children in a circle. An Elephant would die first to save a child. I have always sought to take care of other people, and I'm like a surrogate parent to all my friends kids.
I don't think I really figured out that the Elephant was my totem till I was older, but I always felt a natural affinity to them as a child and began collecting them when I was quite young. Elephants are strong in spirit, and each female in each part of their life, child, mother and old has a very specific part to play in the group. They can be very friendly, though because of their long memory and all the murder that has befallen Elephants in the last few centuries, many have become hostile to humans. It takes a lot of break an Elephants spirit, they do not tame well. They are meant to be free and unattached and go where they please.
Incidentally, (or ironically), I found out in my adulthood, that my great grandmother on my mothers side, (who died before my birth), was a great collector of Elephants. A great aunt of mine still has that collection with her in Florida, and I hope to someday go and see/and or retrieve them.

Mine seems to be the Hummingbird. I have always loved them: we had several rose of sharon bushes when I was a kid, and hummingbirds love these.
I wrote a song several years ago called 'A Hummingbird.' I put it in a show of mine, in a very pivotal point of the show. (The song is about watching someone go through the stages of dying, and being helpless to do anything other than administer to each basic need) On the night the show opened in Chicago we opened the box of Playbill magazines which most professional shows in Chicago use as their programs. There on the cover was a ruby-throated hummingbird. The first line of 'A Hummingbird' is: "Look, there's a hummingbird/ a ruby-throated hummingbird..." I asked the producer how she managed to work that into the cover of every Playbill in Chicago that month. She said she had nothing to do with it. What a wonderful coincidence that was. (I'm getting a poignant lump in my throat remembering that magical night)
Several years before that I went on a 2-week vacation alone in the mountains of Colorado. I had no cell phone; I went to a rest area 20 miles from my campground to call home for my messages. One day I noticed a few hummingbirds at the station, since there were several hummingbird feeders set out. The next day there were hundreds: HUNDREDS of hummingbirds hovering, feeding, zooming back and forth. I was the only one there to witness it. It was as if they were there for me.
Thank you for asking this question. I think I need to look into Hummingbird Medicine and what it means to me.

Horses are also the epitome of loyalty (as true as horse would never tire)
I've been drawn to Lions since childhood. I usually carry one as a personal 'good luck' charm when I travel. (I used to have a stuffed lion I couldn't sleep without, carrying a little stone lion in my pocket is just the grownup version of that)
But the coyote is my personal 'totem' animal. He's clever, but funny and foolish. He has a lot to teach and a lot to learn. And even when he screws up real bad, he always bounces back.
It is fun isn't it.

I thought that a totem animal was one of many who you call upon to spiritually guide you through certain circumstances in your life, while an animal spirit guide is one who you most identify with in your entire personality... *searches for link, but fails* heh heh
Anyway...I love butterflies. I've always wished I had wings / if I could have one superpower, it would be to fly. They're all so unique & colorful, just like every human's personality.
Though, I also love the innocense & beauty of female deer- prancing around with their little ones.
In meditations, I've also seen a male siberian husky quite a few times. It made me realize how much I admire their tame yet wild personalities. They're like a tamed wolf to me, and they're very loyal.

According to Lakota tradition, each person has 9 totems. They aren't actually spirits, but they embody traits that you want to cultivate within yourself.
Wolf, Bear, Buffalo, Crow, Dog, Lizard, Dragonfly, Coyote, and Whale all have significant meaning to my life, and wheel.

I agree with some earlier answers that most of us have several animals that apply to our lives.
The totem animal I announce most often is:
The vulture.
I hate to see anything go to waste especially food. I have made it a point to make sure my friends and family know I will take their leftovers. This involves reminding them that instead of throwing it out they should offer it to me first. I even bring Tupperware to restaurants expecting to bring home leftovers and not wanting to waste Styrofoam.
Most of my tools are second hand. Most of my furniture is second hand. Most of my books, movies, and Cd's are second hand.
Sometimes I even dis-trust things that are new.

I've had different ones at different stages of my life.
I'm glad the fox one seems to be coming to an end - because I was getting tired of feeling invisible.
I saw seven deer last week. (and I live in Detroit) I'm hoping things start going smoother.

I have to say a cat.
I've been likened to a cat by others. I am sanguine like a cat, I have tremendous amounts of patience, I will nap in any sunny spot, and I love balls of yarn, too.
