I currently have my car registered and insured in Texas under my parents policy. I'm moving to CA next week and will be getting my own policy. I made an appointment to get a CA driver's license and register the car, etc. Do I need to show proof of CA insurance in order to register the car (or will my Texas policy be okay at the time until I get a new CA policy)? If I need to show proof of a CA insurance policy before I register the car, isn't it weird to get insurance for CA when I still have a TX driver's license? Or does this not matter and you just update your driver's license info with the new insurance company. Thanks.

Your Texas policy will suffice until it's time to buy CA policy.

However, if you register the car in this state, you'll need to pay a "smog abatement fee" which is usually in the $200 range, in addition to the actual registration fees.

Getting license is easy, just take another written test.

After you got everything squared away you can switch insurance company to one within CA.

Your TX policy will work as proof of insurance until you get things switched over. But be aware that CA has some of the toughest smog laws and tests in the nation, and you will be required to pass before you can use your vehicle. It might be a good idea to make sure you can pass that first before you throw money into other things. Also as pointed out earlier, the cost of living in CA is going to be much higher. Wait until you see rent and house prices.

I sure hope you will be able to afford the adjustment. A friend living in CALI makes the same as I do. We are both making 100k/yr. She has to share her place with three other equally ranked LEOs. just to pay the rent. I don't think it matters too much at first. Call your insurance co. and ask them what you should do first. Call the national number not the local insurance vendor.
