After reading the comments on Yahoo - I get the impression that none of the critics of the 'Patriot Act' and the 'Military Commissions Act' have read either one.

And I am not impressed by people who decide on the merits of these acts without ever bothering to read the acts themselves or any of the judicial opinions related to those acts.

I'm sorry to say this but WE (as a people) created the 'Patriot Act' and the 'Detention Act' (if you don't know what that one is you better read it !!).

We created the acts out of FEAR, which is a HUGE motivator that makes people act irrationally...

In an effort to "protect" ourselves, we gave away many rights that we 'obviously' didn't realize we were giving away.

Terrorism is defined as :
The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.

Our government used the 'possible threat of violence by a group' as the means to intimidate and coerce us into giving up certain rights that we had.

The Detention Act is one that actually takes away the legal rights of a person 'suspected' of being a terrorist....and it seems, my friends, that anyone who were to speak up against an injustice by our government could be considered an insurgent (hence suspected terrorist).

Who did this to us.....WE DID !!!

Here's a clue, THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T WRITE BILLS! That's Congress' job. President Bush didn't stick anything to the Patriot Act. What did you do with that money your parents gave you for your education? You'd better be careful with calling other people by your nicknames too.

The Patriot Act only took away what civil rights you had as an individual in the name of homeland security. I do not feel more secure - I feel less secure. Implement the Patriot Act on Bush - start tapping his phone lines, bug the white house, find out if he can really take the heat from the fire he started.

The Patriot Act he wanted, but violated it!

The Patriot Act is nothing compared to the Military Commissions Act of 2006!

You can place some of the blame on Congress if you want to, but both houses were Republican and they gave Bush everything he ever asked for!

There was no checks and balances, just blank checks!

We can all attribute any changes to the Patriot Act to the approval from Congress. Bush/Cheney aren't alone in the creation of this Bill that is seemingly going out of control.

Yes, I do...You don't want to forget about the Military Commissions Act of 2006 in this question too. They BOTH put strain on American's personal rights. They BOTH tread on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Wow, that last answer almost sounded like a veiled threat, but we all know better, because that's why our troops are dying in Iraq, so we can say what we want without fear of retribution.

May God bless America, and give guidance to those well meaning ones who believe the only way to insure free speech is to strangle it.
