When I was small and taught of religion, it taught me that I shouldn't fear the unknown. That there is more to Heaven and Earth than wordly knowledge and such.

The greatest unknown was of course, God.

It is human nature that we fear the unknown, but I don't know, God made me feel like I shouldn't fear the unknown, instead find out about it.

That's how religion made me felt when I was small.

But nowdays, I see EVERYONE fearing things they don't understand, things that are unknown to them. Religion should give us hope, respect and such, since when did people twist it enough to turn it into fear, racism and hatred?

No true goodness has ever come from fear.

I think the way you just described religion, is how it should be. That's really beautiful. Even as an atheist, I truly mean that.

But I don't think anything has changed actually. Sadly enough fear has always been the biggest base of religion. And that is truly sad.

Fear is a major cause of all racism and hatred. A confident and fearless person will not disrespect people and try to take away their hope. It is particularly sad when racism and hatred are justified in the name of religion.

The doctrine of some religions is overtly racist. Even in a religion that teaches love, hope, and respect, this can give ignorant people a reason to hate others from different races and even different religions.

Religion has been twisted by bad people into fear since time immemorable. Bad people do all sorts of bad things. Religion--be it Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Methodism, Mormonism or whatever!--should make a person better. Happier. Nicer. Religion should not be shoved down the throat of another. Religion should promote peace and love and charity.

Religion is not a matter of "my God is better than your God". Anyone who tells you that is not a true practioner.

It's always been like this. It breaks my heart to see such an innocent force such as religion in the hands of people who want nothing but blood and a spread hatred over this world. People use religion as an excuse for any and all actions, and they use it to satisfy their own lust for power and riches (like the Rennaisance popes...). My only solace is knowing there are people like myself who do not consider a religion some sort of tool or excuse, but a source of strength.

Anyone who watches the news or reads a newspaper will be saturated by propaganda and will fear more. People really need to sit down, stop listening to the news, relax and put themselves in the other person's place. Knowledge is good, as well as religion, to better understand humans.

Don't fear the unknown. For God has told us all things in His Word.

They have never read and/or understood the Bible. They evidently have never experienced a Bible based Christian Church. Sure- I fear things like being ripped off, cancer, war, loss of loved ones, etc. But, I don't fear death. I'm not going to kill myself or do things that are likely going to cause me great harm or death. But, upon death, my next breath will be in the glory of Heaven. Thank God.

This is how all religions begin. Cult following that finally will get upgraded to a faith whilst it will get standard adequate. This is precisely like Christianity used to be whilst it first began.

Fearing a nuclear holocaust, global warming, war, pestilence have nothing to do with fearing religion. What is your point?
