I have had this problem for some time now. About a year maybe. I aslo have depression and anxiety. Im always nervous. That should be no excuse for the chewing of my fingers!!! I chew on them until they bleed, and Im tired of it. The tips are blood red and I think they are infected. My fingertips look horriblly raw b/c of my chewing. My pinky(s) are the worst. I chew on them and the slightest chew, and they bleed. They hurt badly!!! Please don't tell me to put hot sauce on them. Don't tell me to put anything on them that will make them more infected. Also, its Spring. Do you honestly think I'd like to run around with gloves on? Please give me smart and really informative suggestions.

I'd appreciate that alot.

Make an appointment with your doctor, they will help you more than anyone here in Yahoo Answers can. The can even prescribe some medication for your fingers =)

If you're not taking anything for the depression and anxiety you should ask your doc about it. You can put NuSkin on the fingers. It's made to cover hang nails so they don't get pulled or hurt but it not only protects them it tastes HORRIBLE so it won't tempt you as much. Try putting a rubber band around your wrist and snapping it instead of chewing your fingers. But really talk to your doc about some meds to help you.

Please, see a psychiatrist. I am not saying this to be mean, I'm saying it because it is the only way for you to solve this problem. Nail and finger biting can usually be traced back to problems from youth and the only way to fix it is to find out what happened back then and deal with it now. Infact, it could also be the source of your anxiety and depression as well. If you can't afford a psychiatrist, you could try free counceling or talk to your doctor. If you have insurance, there might be something your doctor can do to get you referred to a psychiatrist. As for taking care of your already hurt fingers, I suggest no more typing on the computer first of all, second of all put your hands in some hydrogen peroxide to help clean the wounds and fight the infection, then wrap them in sterile gauze. Good luck, feel better, and please try to take my advice.

Hello there, well got yourself in a bit of strife hey buddy?? You poor thing, it must be so painful having your fingers like that. Not to mention being so blue and stressed out plus really nervous !! Why did you let it go on for sooooo long?? Gee, all you have is a simple vitamin B12 and B2 deficiency !! Really and truly, its as easy as that !!

Depression, anxiety and nervousness are all symptoms of B12 deficiency, other symptoms you may have are inability to concentrate, moodiness, impaired balance, irritability, fatigue and exhaustion, dizziness, chest pains, heart palpitations, head and hand sweats, headaches, migraines and generalised bone aches and pains and nausea.

Have you been under added stress lately?? Most likely by the sounds of it. In stressfull situations we need to increase our intake of the B Vitamin complex as our bodies use more of it.

You need to increase your intake of foods rich in this vitamin ie: yeast, liver, eggs, milk, cheese and fish, kidney and pork.

Recommended daily intake for adults is 2mcg. i suggest you go to the chemist and ask the pharmacist to recommend a good quality brand of multivitamin tablets for your age group containing all the B vitamins. ie: B1,B2, B3, B5,B6,B12. Dont buy them individually as they work best synergistically (as a group). Don't buy synthetic vitamins as they are notoriously hard to digest (they're the really cheap and nasty ones). Expect to pay $25.00 or thereabouts AUD for a months supply.

For B12 to be properly assimilated through the stomach it is necessary to be combined with calcium during absorption to adequately benefit the body. So that's one thing you can do right now !! Go get a glass of milk/milk substitute, or even 2 or 3 and drink it, NOW, then come back and read the rest. Seriously, the benefits are nearly immediate. You can't just start cutting whole food groups out of your diet, your body can't produce or store the B group of vitamins so you have to actually include them in your diet by food or supplement.

If you are a vegetarian and have excluded eggs and dairy products from your diet, then you need B12 supplementation. If you keep regular "Happy Hours" and drink a lot, B12 is an important supplement for. Heavy protein consumers also need extra amounts of this vitamin.

B12 vitamins will alleviate the depression, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, any heart palpitations you may be having. It will also increase your energy levels, maintain a healthy nervous system, relieve moodiness and irritability, ease fatigue and exhausstion and improve concentration, memory and balance. Sweating in the hands and head are also B12 deficiency symptoms. As is nausea, oily facial skin, tiny red pimples on the tops of your thighs......... pheww!! No way, there's more and you need to listen !!

Do you also have sore lips, mouth and tongue, cracked and splitting skin around your fingernails and grainy and sandy feeling eyes? Is that why you are chewing on your fingernails all that time, cos of the burning sensation when the ripped skin is exposed to air??? Well, this is a vitamin deficiency too. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin). This vitamin will be included in the Multivitamin you are most definitely going to buy !! The recommended daily intake for this vitamin is 1.2 - 1.7mg.

Foods rich in B2 are milk, liver, kidney, chese, leafy green vegies, fish, eggs, yoghurt and beans.

With your fingers in this condition you would be well advised to also increase your intake of Vitamin C or they will take a reeeeeally long time to heal. Either increase foods such as citrus fruits, berries, green and leafy vegies, tomatoes, cantaloupe, cauliflower, potatoes and red and green peppers. Or get yourself a sugarless Vitamin C supplement (tablets) to take. Vitamin C is also a water soluble vitamin therefore any excess you take will simply be excreted in your urine. The recommended daily intake for adults s 60mg. Smokers and older people destroy 25 - 100mg of Vitamin C per cigarette they smoke!! Daily doses most often used are 500mg to 4g. Rose hips tea is a really good way to get your vitamin C also. You can get it from any health food store or major supermarket. Rose hips vitamin C contains bioflavonoids and other enzymes that help C assimilate (absorb). They are the richest natural source of vitamin C. (The C is actually manufactured under the bud of the rose - called a hip).

Lastly, you are still here reading???? Sorry, I know this is long but you do need this information. Not much longer :0) last thing I can think of is make absolutely positive that you are drinking at least 8 - 10 glasses of water per day. Dehydration happens very easily, ie: simply by not replacing each caffeine beverage consumed with twice the amount of water. Caffeine tricks the body into thinking that it has plenty of water to spare and that's why when you drink coffees/teas/sodas/soft drinks you peesh lots more !!

O.k. you can go now !! jus kidding, no really go go go get the multivitamins, drink the milk, get some vitamin C tablets. Actually, till you fix the B vitamin deficiencies, citrus fruits will probably smart and burn on your tongue. That's o.k. you'll be right mate.................:0)

PEACE & LIGHT 2 U
