I want to travel in Canada to visit my common law partner. I don't have a required amount in my account, but my sister will give me some money if my visa gets approved. Do you think it is fine?

Sometimes they do check the balance, as well as how long the account has been established, and the average balances. I am from the U.S. where we don't need a visa to visit Canada, but I have been stopped at the border before, twice, and had to show proof of the amount I had in my bank accounts.

If you can, borrow the money in advance and put it in your account in case it is checked. Look on other forums, and maybe other people more in the know will answer you here as well.

Best of luck to you!

I'm guessing that you are not from USA? If coming from the US just for a visit, you don't usually need a visa to enter the country, just a valid photo ID (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate), or a passport.

In the case of an American citizen coming for a visit, I have never heard of the border guards checking bank accounts and I have crossed back and forth numerous times in the past for business and for personal travel. (Although Pichi above says he encountered it so it may happen).

On the other hand, if you are coming from elsewhere and trying to get a visa to enter Canada, they may actually review your bank funds or credit rating, criminal history, and contact your sponsors.
