I used to live in Queenstown and June is the beginning of the ski season there. There are heaps of ski fields near Queenstown. There is Treble Cone, The Remarkables and a heap others I can't quite remember the names of right now. Queenstown is definitly a good base for winter activities in the south island.

June is winter here in NZ so that would be an excellent time to see the snow there. Snow stays on the alps all year round in parts (and you can ski through until November!)

It can (and does) snow in any month that has 28 or more days.
The bulk of the season's snow will fall from end of April to end of August, but, as I said, snow can fall at anytime in the Alps.

Yes occasionally, in the highest inhabited places. Frequently in the mountains. Coldest month is August.
