The short answer to your qestion is "yes". The longer answer is a bit more complicated.
First, about my qualifications to answer your question. My Yahoo name is disabilitylady; I was an HR Executive for over 30 years before I went on Disability; I've been successfully managing the myriad symptoms of MS for over 45 years. When I applied for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) I was the first person in my state to get approved the first time around in under 30 days!! Usually, it takes about 3 years!!
If you email me, I'll send you a free 24 page ebooklet that I recently completed that summarizes the whole process. AND, you can check out my website, for lots of info:
http://www.disabilitykey.com
Now, for the longer info: The bottomline is that you have to prove that you cannot perform "gainful employment" for which your age, education and prior work history equip you to perform that can earn you about $830/month at minimum. You have to document and prove that your symptoms impair your "normal daily living" activities; and, you need corroboration. Here's where your dr's letter that you "cannot perform gainful employment" is critical.
The free ebooklet contains a sample letter for you to use with yoour dr, along with the entire process for documenting and getting corroboration.
Good luck!!

No the Social Security Administration determines disability. It's a long drawn out process and they generally say no multiple times before you get anywhere with them. It often takes months to years to get through all the red tape.
Copy ALL your relevant medical files and keep good track of it all. Avoid lawyers if you can because they will take 1/3 of the settlement.
My guess is with knee surgery you may not be successful. The doctor will want to send you to physical therapy which could make a huge difference.
Good luck with it all. I've been there so I know what it's like. I have MS and they kept trying to tell me I was recovered. I'm sure other people with chronic incurable diseases would like to know how you recover!?!

Yes, and also Social Security may want you to visit a Doctor that they recomend. But the more doctors you have on your side the more help it is to you. My son was 16 months old when he recieved it, and he had 4 doctors saying yes for him.
If you get denied always, always, always, fight the results with an apeal, if you reapply you start over on the list. And you could be talking about 3 or 4 months of lost disability.
Good luck to you, I hope everything works out for you.

Yes your doctor has to qualify you for disability. It's sometimes difficult so you may have to seek out different doctors that has empathy for you. I am surprised that the surgeon has not done this. Check out the Disability Determinations office in your area, they should be able to get the ball rolling. Great luck to you!! Plus they have short term and long term disability options.
