A card issued by a bank that combines the functions of an ATM card and checks. A debit card can be used to withdraw cash at a bank like an ATM card, and it can also be used at stores to pay for goods and services in place of a check. Unlike a credit card, a debit card automatically withdraws money from your checking account at the time of the transaction. Debit cards are regulated by the Electronic Funds Transfer Act.
A card which allows customers to access their funds immediately, electronically. Unlike a credit card, a debit card does not have any float.

a debit card can be used like a credit card but instead of borrowing money it takes money from your checking account. It also has a limit on how much can be used at a time (it's a security thing and you can ask your bank to change the amount). An ATM card cannot work as a debit card unless it says debit on it and has a VISA or MasterCard logo on the front. Your bank can make one for you. (A debit card CAN be used as an ATM card though, so when you have your debit card, you can destroy your old ATM card)

If you're using an ATM card, that doesn't have the Visa or Mastercard logo in the bottom right hand corner of the card, it won't work on paypal. An easy explanation of a debit card is that it's works exactly like your ATM card does, when you enter yout PIN to pay for items or withdraw money, but it also can be used like a Visa card, but it comes directly out your checking account.

Yes. To sign up for paypal using your personal chequing account, you just need to know the Branch number, your account number, and the transit number (these are numbers located along the bottom of a cheque). If you don't have cheques or just dont know the numbers, simply call your bank and ask them!
Note: the number on your atm card(debit card) is NOT your account number.

The different between debit card and credit card is: you need to deposit and with credit balance inorder to use your debit card. Whereas for credit card, you are using the bank credit in advance.

debit card is your checking account, and if it has a visa or mastercard logo you can.
