Would an Austrailian DVD would on an American player or are they in different formats? Like NTSC and PAL?

no you can not play DVDs on American DVD players. each country has it own region.

they are in a different format but in regions only

pal and ntsc only exist for for VHS tapes only and does not apply to DVDs

USA and Canada are region 1
austrailia would be region 4

so no the dvd you have wont work on american dvd plays

Most of the time you can't, but there are some cases where the DVD will play on your player. I actually bought a German copy of "Night of the Demons 2" a while back and it played fine. I also bought a Japanese version of the movie "Dolls" and it worked. I think you have to look at the region labels on them. If it says Region 0, then I think it will usually play. Just make sure it doesn't come with unwanted subtitles.

no and NTSC is a certain type of out put for video and or audio the dvd will not work its complicated but it just wont work
