Mine eat it because they love it. One of them will just lie down and graze..she really likes her fresh veggies. I give her salad at dinnertime.
However, some dogs eat it to make them barf, or to ease their tummies.
If your dog likes to eat grass, make sure it is good clean grass, not freshly fertilized or treated with insecticides.

Q. Why do dogs eat grass?
A. A dog eating grassDogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet.
Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach.
The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner.
In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.

Dogs will eat grass. One of mine is always out grazing. Sometimes they are sick, it just helps with the 'roughage' in the diet, what they would do for themselves in the wild. Sometimes if their tummies are bad, they will eat a coarser broader leaf grass, and will barf that back up. Usually with no ill effects. However if your puppy is only 9 months old and has been really badly sick, and not just through the grass, I would advise going to check it out with a vet. At that age, the slightest illness, can be signs of other things. If you are worried it is worth seeing a vet, however, if it is a little bit of sick with grass, (just sort of green or yellow bile iwth the grass in it, I would not worry too much!) but then I am NOT a vet, so you need to go with your first instinct and get things checked out if you are worried. have fun with your staffie

Often, a dog will eat long, stemmy pieces of grass in order to throw up. They eat it quickly, usually ripping it up by the roots. However, a dog who slowly "grazes" here and there on fresh, young grasses probably needs extra vitamins or chlorophyll in his diet. It's similar to us eating a salad, and the dog is not likely to be sick or vomit. However, there is the possibility that eaten this way, the grass can help settle his stomach.

Have you tried feeding the poor thing.---- seriously I have had many dogs of different breeds and have found that they will sometimes eat grass and then be sick. It does seem to be used by them to settle their stomach. Dont worry about it dogs can be so funny I remember one that always ate coal. As long as it has a cold wet nose and seems in good form there should be no problem.

No, they don't just eat it if they are sick, my 4 dogs graze like cattle some days and they are not sick it's just something they do, they especially like it when the grass is new ( I live on a farm), they don't lack in vitamins either.

Not necessarily.
I've had many dogs and all of them ate grass.
It can mean that they have an upset stomach.
Maybe she likes eating grass, or maybe she's missing nutrients in her diet.
