I just bought a house that was built in the early 80's and it has a wall texture that really needs to be replaced? What's the procedure of wall texturing? Do I still have to scrape the old wall texture?

It depends on the amount of money you want to spend, how hard you want to work.It is better to scrape the loose texture off. Be careful not to build up the thickness too much. The new on top of the old. Texture paint is easy to use with a texture roller. There is also a product that looks like texture paint, but it is on a roll like wallpaper. (Lowe's) and can be painted any color you choose.

Assuming you do not like the wall texture and just want a simple, flat painted wall, the easiest and cheapest method is to buy paintable wall paper. Many professionals use it as it is easier than scraping or replastering the whole wall!
The best part is, as soon as the paper is up and dry, you can paint right over it, whatever color you decide, and it acts like fresh primed drywall.

Goodluck!

If the house was built in the80s, the walls are most likely drywall. If it is a heavy texture, you are likely better off re drywalling. You will save a lot of time and aggravation. If it is light (like a sand texture) you can skim-coat with drywall mud (joint/taping compound). If you can't do this yourself, help yourself and find a professional. Ask friends who have had work done to give you a recommendation. GET MORE THAN ONE ESTIMATE... ANNNNND... ASK FOR REFERENCES!
