I just answered a question in which a man says women should be forced to obey Shariah law. I am a muslim woman, and I've studied Shariah law. Much of it is contrary to the teachings of Islam, such as apostates being murdered when the Quran says to leave them alone, and victims of rape being doubted by being forced to provide four wtinesses when the hadiths say that on her very word the rapist is stoned to death. Why would these "men" want to force that on women when it's against Islam? In my opinion, it's cultural and the men who desire this are insecure in their ownselves, so they need to "control" a woman whom they consider weaker and dumber (yeah RIGHT! eyes rolling) to make themselves feel better.
What is your opinion on men like this? They also deny women their islamic OBLIGATION and RIGHT to an education saying that it's from Islam, when the Quran and hadiths themselves ORDER both genders to be educated.
What do you honestly think of these kinds of "men"?

I've visited Pakistan and lived there for a few months at a time. I have walked in those shoes, and I hated the way they fit.

i think most of the men were raised with their traditions on how to treat women. they happened to be muslims. so often people mistook muslims as abusive to women.
islam did not deny women's right for freedom, for education. even the freedom to choose her own husband.
yup, i agree with you. its cultural. muslims in other part of this world didnt practise that kind of act.

Your answer lies in the male controlled society of Islam. They have been taught what they believe, and the women have not been able to contradict this. They have been over powered by men, who tend to be stronger, and by the courts of these countries that also tend to be dominated by men. Men, do tend to want to dominate women, I believe this is wrong, but it does seem to be natural. If "I" have power, why should I give it up, besides, the Imam said so, so it must be true. Once the women can get the men to understand what is right, then things should change, but for those trapped in Islamic countries, don't hold your breath waiting for positive change. I am a man, and I think that Islam needs to be changed, a lot, better yet, eradicated.

Well, frankly... I find the majority of organized religions just a way to control the masses and instill fear in to the heart of man. Religion was an early form of government and now that we do have such strong political figures and structures all around the world, religion is more of a comfort blanket for those who fear death and need a book and a set of rules to tell them how to be a good person. I also think that the majority of religions are a way for a man to supress and control women and give them scapegoats for their "needs". Like the whole thing in the Christian bible about how it's better for a man to put his seed inside a whore instead of let it spill in waste. So right there they have an excuse for cheating because it was a sin to masturbate. I think the archacic religions you're speaking of are especially a way for men to control women and put them on a lower level. There's so many reasons why men do this, the main one is barbaric, narrow-minded thinking and the other main reason is like you said, because they're weak themselves and fear us being powerful, intelligent and God forbid, proud. We're supposed to be submissive and serve the man, right? I mean, after all, we're not even an original creation, the first woman supposedly came from a rib from Adam. We are a man's apendage!!!! You also have to consider the fact all the religious books, scrolls, you name it was written by MEN. All of them from Islam, to Muslim to Christianity to Judasim... All of their scriptures are written by men. So when the penholder has the power... You know they're going to put as much influence they can in to it. A lot of it is personal opinion... If it was written by a man, who is not by any means the voice of God, who is he to dictate what's right and wrong?

Muslim men in general use the Quran to give themselves rights(all ready stated by God) but use hadith to restrict the rights of women(all though God mentions those rights in the Quran. So its basically a pick and choose religion at this point. Men pick whats easiest and gives them the most and choose for women whats hardest and most restrictive. Until that changes nothing changes in Islam.
i agree with the poster that blames mothers. paradise is at the feet of mothers....or so the saying goes in Islam...and yet Muslim mothers are raising boys to be disrespectful to women by allowing these male superior/female inferior cultural hadiths to rule our lives. if mothers dont care...how will the Islamic society better itself?

I'm not familiar with the law you're talking about but, if a man feels the need to control a woman, you can bet he's an insecure little loser who knows he's worthless so. he has to exert power over someone or something that he thinks is weaker. Religious reason or not, the guy is a punk.

Religions are full of people who selectively lay one burden (usually the most difficult) upon others while taking the other burden (usually the most lenient and forgiving) upon themselves.
There is hypocrisy and 'selectivity' in every religion, which is why 'saints' (the ones who follow the doctrine the closest, usually) are so prized and so few.

The world is fast shrinking-Chinese are becoming more prosperous--our present day communications can take us anywhere instantly--women who are being held back by oppressive laws won't put up with it forever--they'll see women living freely--& start to question their culture--it's not a secret now of how other people live.

Fanatacism knows no boundaries. People have been twisting and interpreting holy books to their own ends for millenia. This is just one example, out of many, of a person who feels the need to put one group down, just to feel dominant and powerful.
Disregard the stupidity of people like this.
