Yeah, they really are. I am doing it for my own fun.

How to get her to see it my way?

Great point, Kevin.

She knew I was taking lessons I just did not reveal the $129/hr dual-flight for the 172.

As quickly as you are legally able to, take her to some exotic fly-in location for a nice, romantic week-end. See if you can't get her interested in the planning and logistics of such a great getaway, and make sure she knows it's not a one time deal, that you hope to do that sort of thing often. Then start teaching her to fly well enough that if something happens to you during the flight, she'll be able to land it safely.

Should have told her in the first place man but... Take her with you. I'm sure you're probably flying a 4 seater, 172 or 160 Cherokee or the like. Even if not rent one for a lesson and put her in the back seat with a headset. 99% chance she loves it man. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen a woman swoon over a short hop in a light GA airplane. Once she sees and experiences her hubby land an airplane bro you've become a man amongst men in her eyes. I've taken dates in 150's, landed like I had hands of stone only to hear how amazing it was. She'll like it if you share the experience with her. On the remote chance she doesn't, tell her it is therapy. No better therapy than taking a plane by one's self for a few hours and boring holes through the sky. I'd be prepared though, not that she gets angry, but after the flight, I'd be prepared for her to want lessons for herself. I'm fully convinced women are the best and most eager pilots I was privy to a friend's call to his girl, she just got a ride, her first smal plane ride in a Cessna 1000G cockpit. He's an ATP with serious hours but never took her up. She works at a local FBO and snagged a ride on a check out flight and had the bug 30 minutes after landing. Great stuff. Half the women I've taken up are desperately wanting their privates now. Amazing how it all works out. Good luck and safe flying.

It only takes two things to fly, airspeed and money. Now that you have lost one of them, all the best!

Any way she can snoop into the paychecks of a professional pilot? It might convince her that what you do now is an investment.

Explain to her that it's something that you enjoy and as your wife she should be excited you found a hobby that you enjoy so much. Ask her to respect your choice and point out the fact that you don't put down the things you like. It's partially your money too, and you deserve to enjoy your life.

Ask her this, if she's on a plane going on a holiday with you and the pilots get food poisoning and can't fly or land the plane. Would she prefer to crash and die or be glad to know that you will be able to land the plane if there is nobody else on it to do so.

everyone deserves a hobby and a way to de-stress, if you can afford it without taking money from the household I don't see why it would be a problem, maybe she's worried about your safety and is using the money to get you to stop, just try telling her its a hobby and you are up on the safety, and you deserve to have something just for yourself

Take her up before you learn how, then tell her that this would be a great time to learn how to fly, she will insist you get lessons.

Take her flying with you and see if she will join the fun.

I certainly would want to ~~~ if I had the opportunity.

If she wants no part of it ~~~ let her pick a hobby she would like to pursue.

Good Luck ~~~ I hope it works out for you both.

Promise her you'll take her treetop flyin' someday....or give her a hearty introduction to the Mile High Club.

Just don't gripe at her when she takes up an expensive interest.
