If you read it beforehand then I think it's most useful. It gives me a preview of the lecture to come, and helps contextualize & clarify parts of the lecture that you may not normally understand. In a good class the teacher/prof does not simply regurgitate the textbook's material.

Ideally students should skim or read the text before class, and then read it again some point after class, but sometimes it becomes impossible with busy schedules. I do think you get the greatest benefit with reading the text before class, though.

the best strategy is to come to class prepared by reading your text before lecture, this way you will be better able to contribute to discussions
