well this question is for the atheists. You people say you don't believe there is a god but why do so many atheists talk about the subject on god and discuss to people who believe that he exists? And why is god mostly the main subject for atheists I mean couldn't you guys also talk about other religions such as budda? or Islam or even pagen religions. And why does it seem that atheists just want to put down god and not budda or the others I mentioned?

because atheist hate christians because they so prejudicly belive that we are all evil people who try to force our religion onto them and that our God is evil and twisted has caused the deaths of millions, and nothing else has??(cough hitlers natural selection cough), and with having such a primitive education about the bible, they create pretty weird rationalizations about the bible, as seen on Yahoo Answers a lot.

All religions that have a deist basis are ridiculous.
Islam is the dangerous version.
Bhuddism is possibly the most sensible and is regarded as less of a religion and more of a way of life.
I will criticise Islam for the death and destruction currently being wrought in its name.
I will criticise Christianity for the same, some years ago, and the continuing stupidity of it now.
If we atheists didn't talk about religion, the bible-thumpers would have the debate all to themselves - a debate is supposed to be what these pages are about - and a one-sided debate is about as useful as an ashtray on a motor-bike.
or there to be any worthwhile content on these pages, there has to be a contrary position. Just imagine what it would be like if all you had here was religious people asking religious questions and getting religious answers - and requests for prayers and the sending of blessings and the reassurance that jesus was alive, etc, etc.
That is NOT what this is all about.
If a pagan asked a question here, there would be answers. Same for muslims, same for jews and so on BUT it is the christian zealots who plague these pages with constant stupidity - such as this very question.

Get real - god is imaginary and, it follows, all the associated nonsense that is attached - heaven, hell, angels, satan, souls, etc are all fabricated.

It IS 2007. Why not act like you are a member of this century? To do that, you WILL have to start using logic, reason and common-sense. Qualities that you are currently setting aside to validate your outdated beliefs.

Not all atheists always talk about religion.

But, there is an interesting thing about philosophy that attracts some atheists. Likewise, there are some white people that are interested in Black History Month. There are Americans who are interested in Japanese culture. And so on.

I can't speak for other atheists, so I won't try. I will try to answer your questions as best as I can.

"couldn't you guys also talk about other religions such as budda? or Islam or even pagen religions"
They do. I've had some interesting talks about paganism in college.

"atheists just want to put down god and not budda"
I will point out that the Christian and Muslim gods are called upon for violence and oppression. I've yet to see Buddha or Diana be called upon for violence and oppression. If you show me a Wiccan who is pushing to legislate someone's freedom, then I'll take issue.

I personally don't put down God. I'm sure if God is real, then he's a much better deity than Christians purport. I bet God is not as big of a jerk as the Bible portrays him. I will argue with Christians, especially the ones that want to oppress people. There are many people who can't live as happy of lives because laws prevent them from marrying who they want or doing what they want, even if it harms no one. There are plenty of people who have been killed by people who feel they are doing God's work. There are people who are emotionally scarred because Christians tell them that their parents are in Hell.

Yeah, I feel the need to stand up to those people. It has nothing to do with God though. I don't have anything against the guy, and I'm sure he has nothing against me, if he exists. He hasn't been interested in proving me wrong, so I'm going to believing what God wants me to believe--which is ironically not believing he exists.

Just because a person doesn't believe in god, that doesn't mean that they don't have an opinion about aspects and the consequences of faith.

Atheists don't (typically) discuss Buddhism, for a simple reason: Buddhism is an atheist, albeit spiritual, philosophy. I don't know enough about Islam to adequately question it, and I have never been threatened with eternal damnation by a pagan. Other religions don't make it a point to want their deity in American government and its institutions. Other religions aren't trying to influence the laws of the country that I live in, or question loudly (and incorrectly) scientific fact.

Personally, I aim to make a person THINK with my answers. I have read and studied quite a few different faiths, and limit myself (on R&S) to those topics that I know something about...Buddhism included. I attempt, for the most part, to back up my answers with facts (acquired from outside the bible and its influence) when neccesary, and use the bible to impeach the bible (thereby attempting to make one think, and decide if they're comfortable with their beliefs) as well.

It's a subject of fascination for me. I'm a skeptic regarding all things supernatural, yet I love to read about ghosts, UFO's, psychics, etc. I don't know why, it's just always interested me, as has religion.

I don't spend a lot of time putting down Christians, but I usually discuss Christianity because of proximity. I come in contact with a lot more Christians than I do people of other religions. I enjoy talking about other religions as well, but the subject of Christianity comes up a lot more often.

Just my random thoughts, but I think that a lot of atheists (especially here in the US) are most familiar with Christianity, and that's why it seems that most talk about god and not other religions and their beliefs. Granted there are a lot of religions out there, but it seems that those religions are not what you would call "mainstream" in this country.

Regarding why atheists talk about religion, I think it is a matter of bucking the "norm" of having a religion and getting those who have a faith to get riled up and have a heated discussion.

Heh hee. They do not talk about religion all the time. I know for fact that there are other subjects they like to talk about too.

I think that it is a good thing that they are here talking about God even if they do not believe in one. Even Jesus hanged out with non-believers, and got scolded for it.

This is an open discussion column. Atheists are OK with gods that do not demand anything. That is why God of the Bible is not so popular.

Well, I don't know enough about Islam or other religions as I know about Christianity. I can't debate or argue over something if I don't have the knowledge about it. The reason why I argue is because I hate religion. I had personal experiences with religion that has opened my mind and I have come to find out the horrors and harm that it does. It is just a passion I have, the passion to open the minds of religious people. I hate to see people like Bush in office, forcing his way of life down our mouths.

Why does the school teacher teach? Because she wants everyone to be educated and know the truth about things.

I'll field this one. Well atheists don't really believe in ANY god, and that being the case atheists will pretty much argue against any of them. However, being that most atheists at least on here, are exposed to primarily Christianity, well, it makes it pretty hard to ignore. In fact, Christians outnumber atheists in the US by 2:1. The fact that Christians believe they have to "save" others makes them a very vocal force. Therefore in order to have any foothold in this society atheists have to speak up for themselves at every chance they get.

That is what I always ask about that, too. I think that many atheists are really agnostic and want you to do the job of proving to them whether or not they should believe in a supreme being of any kind whether it be God, Buddha, or even the Doorknob, as acknowledged in 12-step programs. Anyway, good question!
